“I wanted to do a service… not just to my viewers, but to others fighting this too,” Amanpour says as she opens up about her battle.

In a sobering yet defiant revelation, legendary CNN chief international anchor Christiane Amanpour has confirmed her ovarian cancer has returned for the third time, just four years after her initial diagnosis rocked the journalism world.

The Emmy-winning journalist, 67, broke the news during a candid interview on the Changing the Ovarian Cancer Story podcast hosted by Hannah Vaughan Jones, calling her latest recurrence “very well managed” but also “a reminder that I’m still in this fight.

“This is my reality,” Amanpour said. “It’s not something I ever wanted, but it’s something I refuse to be silent about.”

Amanpour was first diagnosed in June 2021, shortly after vanishing from air for nearly a month—raising concerns among longtime CNN viewers.

“People started to ask where I was—had I been fired? Was I dead? The rumors were flying,” Amanpour recalled. “So when I returned to the air, I told the truth. I had undergone major surgery and started chemotherapy.”

She later revealed that her absence was due to an aggressive form of ovarian cancer that required immediate intervention. Her transparency was lauded at the time, with women across the globe praising her for de-stigmatizing the disease.

“I spoke out because I wanted to do a service, not just to my viewers but to others who might be in a similar situation,” she said.

Amanpour, whose fearless reporting from the frontlines of Bosnia, Iraq, and Syria has earned her international acclaim, says fighting cancer is a battle of its own.

“I’ve reported from war zones. I’ve faced bombs, dictators, and propaganda. But cancer is the battle that comes for your body when you least expect it.”

She emphasized that it was her own vigilance—listening to her body, insisting on scans—that led to early detection and quick care.

The announcement comes amid growing concern about women’s health care access in America, especially under President Donald Trump’s second term, which has seen renewed attempts to defund federal women’s health initiatives.

Democrats and women’s health advocates point to stories like Amanpour’s as reminders of what’s at stake. The CDC recently reported that late-stage ovarian cancer diagnoses are on the rise, especially in underserved communities where access to OB-GYN services has been slashed.

Amanpour urged women everywhere not to ignore unusual symptoms and to push for answers.

“It’s so easy to write things off—fatigue, bloating, aches—as part of aging or stress,” she said. “But if something feels off, you must advocate for yourself.”

“Had I waited, I might not be here to tell the story.”

With decades of experience reporting from the world’s most dangerous regions, Amanpour’s decision to go public with her diagnosis has made her not just a journalist, but a champion for medical transparency and women’s empowerment.

While she did not specify the treatment she is currently undergoing, she made clear that she intends to continue working, adding, “I’m not going anywhere.”
