Treasure Hunter Finds 15,000 Roman Coins in Clay Pots

In a story straight out of an adventure film, 36-year-old treasure hunter David Moss says he spent three nights sleeping in his car to protect what could be the largest Roman coin hoard ever discovered in Wales.

Moss, who has been combing fields and forests with a metal detector for nearly a decade, stumbled upon two ancient clay pots filled with thousands of coins in a remote, “virtually untouched” area of North Wales.

“I just didn’t want to leave it out of my sight,” Moss told the BBC. “You’re talking about something that’s survived from the time of druids and Vikings through to the Romans. It’s incredible.”

Before this discovery, Moss had uncovered roughly 2,700 coins over ten years of treasure hunting — but nothing close to this scale. He now estimates the pots could contain between 10,000 and 15,000 coins, possibly dating back nearly 2,000 years.

Experts at the National Museum Cardiff have confirmed that the find appears to be the largest Roman coin hoard ever unearthed in Wales. The museum is currently analyzing the artifacts to determine their age, origin, and historical context.

Historians believe such coin hoards were often buried deliberately during times of war or political instability, as residents sought to safeguard their wealth from invading forces. Many of these caches were never recovered — their owners likely perished or fled, leaving the treasures entombed beneath the soil for centuries.

“The Romans buried coins for safekeeping during periods of unrest, and sometimes, those coins stayed hidden for millennia,” said Dr. Helen Parry, an archaeologist at Bangor University. “Finds like this one give us a rare window into how ordinary people lived — and feared — during turbulent times.”

After making the discovery, Moss said he was too anxious to leave the coins behind. Instead, he camped out in his car for three nights, guarding the spot where he’d found them.

“I couldn’t risk someone stumbling across it,” he said. “I’ve worked years for moments like this. I felt like I was watching over history itself.”

The exact location of the find remains a closely guarded secret while museum officials conduct their investigation. Moss’s story, however, is already becoming legend among British treasure hunters — a reminder that sometimes, persistence, patience, and a little luck can uncover a piece of the ancient world.
