In a chaotic late-night post that sent shockwaves through Washington, President Donald Trump erupted on his Truth Social platform early Sunday morning, demanding that his supporters “DO SOMETHING!!!” — a phrase critics say dangerously echoes his rhetoric before the January 6th insurrection.
The 79-year-old president claimed, without evidence, that his predecessor Joe Biden had ordered FBI agents to infiltrate the crowd during the 2021 Capitol riot. “THE BIDEN FBI PLACED 274 AGENTS INTO THE CROWD ON JANUARY 6,” Trump wrote at 12:38 a.m. “If this is so, which it is, a lot of very good people will be owed big apologies. What a SCAM – DO SOMETHING!!!”
The problem: Trump was president at the time of the attack.
Escalating Rhetoric and a Pattern of Obsession
The president’s post continues a months-long string of social media tirades targeting his perceived enemies — a campaign that some insiders describe as a “vendetta presidency.”
“It’s not governance. It’s grievance,” said one former White House aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “He’s fixated on revenge, and these posts are part of that pattern — they’re not policy, they’re payback.”
Trump’s outburst follows his embarrassing gaffe last month when he accidentally posted what appeared to be a private message to Attorney General Pam Bondi. The post, intended as a direct message, publicly berated Bondi for not prosecuting former FBI Director James Comey and other Trump critics fast enough.
“Pam: I have reviewed over 30 statements and posts saying that, essentially, ‘same old story as last time, all talk, no action,’” Trump wrote. “What about Comey, Adam ‘Shifty’ Schiff, Leticia??? They’re all guilty as hell, but nothing is going to be done.”
He added in all caps, “JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!”
Fallout and Political Shockwaves
According to The Wall Street Journal, U.S. officials said Trump was “surprised” to learn his message went public. Bondi, reportedly furious, demanded an explanation and called the president directly. Within five days, a federal grand jury indicted Comey on charges of making false statements and obstructing a congressional proceeding — a move Democrats and watchdog groups blasted as “open political persecution.”
New York Attorney General Letitia James, another Trump nemesis, was indicted shortly after on unrelated bank fraud charges involving properties in Brooklyn and Virginia. In a defiant video message Thursday, James denounced the case as “a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system.”
“This is about silencing those who hold him accountable,” James said. “This is not justice — it’s retaliation.”
Experts Warn of Dangerous Precedent
Legal scholars say the president’s online tirades are more than outbursts — they’re signals. “Trump uses social media the way autocrats use state TV,” said constitutional law expert Maya Levinson of Georgetown University. “He’s rallying his base to view justice as loyalty and dissent as betrayal.”
Democratic lawmakers, meanwhile, are calling for oversight hearings into the Justice Department’s independence. “What we’re seeing is the erosion of democratic norms right before our eyes,” Senator Elizabeth Warren said in a Saturday interview. “We cannot allow any president to turn prosecution into political theater.”
Still, among Trump’s loyal supporters, his message resonated. Within hours, “DO SOMETHING!!!” began trending on Truth Social, with users urging Bondi to “lock them up” and accusing the “deep state” of conspiring against Trump.
A Presidency Defined by Vengeance
For many Americans, the scene feels eerily familiar — a president venting rage into the digital void while fueling division across the nation. Yet the stakes in 2025 are higher than ever.
“Every time Trump lashes out, it’s like we’re watching democracy bend a little more,” said one longtime Washington observer. “And every time, it gets a little harder to straighten it back.”
