President Donald Trump’s latest attempt to score a cheap political laugh turned into a painfully awkward moment on Sunday when his jab at former President Barack Obama landed with deafening silence at the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary celebration.
The event, held under a blazing Virginia sun, was meant to honor two and a half centuries of naval service. But with Trump running nearly an hour late—and the nation mired in a partial government shutdown—many of the active-duty service members seated in uniform had little patience for politics.
That didn’t stop the president from trying.
Reading from a teleprompter but veering off-script, Trump began reminiscing about his former White House physician, now-Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX), who was also a doctor under Presidents Obama and George W. Bush.
“A man that everybody loves—he was my doctor in the White House and I got to know him very well,” Trump said. “He was also the doctor for Barack Hussein Obama. Have you heard of him?”
He paused, expecting the crowd to erupt in boos or laughter.
Instead, silence.
One Navy officer present told the Norfolk Pilot, “It was like everyone collectively decided not to take the bait. We were there to celebrate the Navy, not listen to campaign jokes.”
Undeterred, Trump pressed on—launching into one of his favorite tales about how Jackson supposedly once declared him the “best physical specimen” of the three presidents he’d served.
“At a press conference they asked him, ‘Who’s in the best shape, who’s the strongest?’” Trump said, smirking. “That’s easy—President Donald Trump!”
A few scattered claps followed, but even those seemed forced. The mood, according to attendees, was “half cringe, half confusion.”
The comment drew particular irony given months of speculation about Trump’s own health after multiple public stumbles and reports of slurred speech. “He looked tired and his delivery was off,” said one attendee, describing a “rambling” hour-long address filled with tangents about tariffs, nuclear weapons (“the N-word,” as Trump called it), and Joe Biden’s use of an autopen.
The Norfolk flop came just days after another high-profile embarrassment inside the administration. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, a former Fox News host whom Trump renamed “Secretary of War,” raised eyebrows when he told Marines at Quantico:
“Should our enemies choose foolishly to challenge us, they will be crushed by the violence, precision, and ferocity of the War Department… In other words, FAFO.”
The crowd’s response—muted laughter and a single “woo-hoo”—mirrored Trump’s reception in Norfolk.
“This isn’t a campaign rally,” said retired Admiral James Stavridis, former NATO Supreme Commander. “Service members don’t expect to be props for political theater.”
Trump’s fondness for Ronny Jackson, the man at the center of his “physical specimen” anecdote, also raised eyebrows. Jackson was stripped of his Navy rank and saw his medical license lapse after a string of misconduct scandals, including allegations of drunkenness and handing out prescription drugs “like candy.”
Still, Jackson remains one of Trump’s fiercest loyalists. It was Jackson, not a military surgeon, who reportedly treated Trump last year after he was grazed by a bullet at a Pennsylvania rally.
“I’ve never walked into a room so silent before,” Trump reportedly told aides afterward, according to one White House source.
For a president who has built his political identity on rallies and crowd adoration, the Norfolk silence was a rare and humbling moment—an audience of America’s military refusing to play along.
Political strategist Maria Cardona summed it up bluntly:
“This was the sound of respect meeting exhaustion. The military’s tired of being used as a backdrop for Donald Trump’s ego.”
