Obama Slams Trump’s Indifference After Charlie Kirk Assassination

Barack Obama is once again stepping into the political spotlight, blasting Donald Trump for fanning division in the aftermath of the shocking killing of far-right activist Charlie Kirk.

Speaking Tuesday night in Erie, Pennsylvania, at an event hosted by the Jefferson Educational Society, the former president made clear he believes Trump is pouring gasoline on the fire at a time when Americans are desperate for calm.

“When I hear not just our current president, but his aides, who have a history of calling political opponents ‘vermin,’ enemies who need to be ‘targeted,’ that speaks to a broader problem,” Obama told the crowd, according to the New York Times. “At moments like this, part of the president’s job is to pull people together.”

Obama’s comments came days after Trump, in a Fox News interview, flatly admitted he “couldn’t care less” about uniting the country following Kirk’s assassination at Utah Valley University on September 10.

Instead, Trump has leaned into his familiar rhetoric, blaming “radical left-wing ideology” for the violence, even as Democrats have faced a wave of politically motivated attacks in 2025.

“Trump is making it about political points when he should be making it about healing,” said former Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett in an interview with MSNBC. “That tells you everything you need to know about his priorities.”

Obama contrasted Trump’s behavior with that of Republicans he once sparred with on the campaign trail.

“I think George W. Bush believed in bringing people together. I know John McCain believed it. I know Mitt Romney believed it,” Obama said. “This isn’t a Democratic value or a Republican value. It’s an American value.”

He pointed to his own response after the 2015 Charleston church massacre carried out by white supremacist Dylann Roof. “My response was not: who may have influenced this troubled young man to engage in that kind of violence? And then go after my political opponents. That wasn’t the job. My job was to comfort the country.”

Kirk, 31, was a central figure in Trump’s MAGA movement and founder of Turning Point USA, a group credited with expanding Republican outreach to young voters. To his critics, Kirk was a lightning rod who spread disinformation about elections and vilified LGBTQ+ communities. To his supporters, he was a “patriot” silenced by what they see as leftist violence.

Obama’s refusal to tiptoe around Trump’s rhetoric underscores the dangerous political moment. “We’ve had presidents before who understood restraint,” said presidential historian Julian Zelizer. “Trump openly says unity is not his responsibility. That is unprecedented in modern American history.”

Authorities have charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder and other offenses. Police allege Robinson told his roommate — who is transgender — that he had “enough of [Kirk’s] hatred” before opening fire.

The chilling motive has only intensified the political storm. Trump’s allies are already weaponizing the details, claiming the killing is proof of “woke radicalization.” Democrats, meanwhile, warn that Trump’s language and culture of grievance have created a climate where violence feels inevitable.

“This should have been the moment for Trump to call for peace,” said Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ). “Instead, he shrugged and said he doesn’t care. That’s not leadership. That’s cowardice.”

With the 2026 midterms looming, the fallout from Kirk’s killing could reshape the political battlefield. Democrats see an opening to contrast Obama’s message of unity with Trump’s unapologetic divisiveness.

“The country is tired of living on a knife’s edge,” Obama told the audience in Erie. “We’re better than this. But we’ll only prove it if we demand something different from our leaders.”
