In a stunning escalation of Republican infighting, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has publicly blasted her own party’s leadership — and even President Donald Trump — over their refusal to release newly uncovered Jeffrey Epstein files.
In an exclusive interview with the Wall Street Journal on Saturday, Greene accused GOP leadership of betraying voters who were promised transparency.
“We campaigned on transparency, especially the Epstein files,” Greene said. “Now, all of a sudden, there’s this hard stance coming from Republican leadership, from members, and from the administration itself. I’m shocked by it.”
Tensions Boil in Trump’s GOP
President Trump, now deep into his second term, is fighting his own legal battles over his past connection to Epstein. He’s currently suing the Wall Street Journal for $10 billion over reports suggesting he once maintained a personal relationship with the disgraced financier.
Trump has repeatedly dismissed the entire Epstein investigation as a “Democratic hoax” aimed at destroying his presidency. But Greene — a vocal Trump loyalist until now — isn’t buying it.
“The truth needs to come out,” she said bluntly. “The government holds the truth. We owe it to the victims. We owe it to the American people.”
Fallout From Justice Department’s Epstein Findings
The controversy erupted after the Justice Department released new findings confirming Jeffrey Epstein’s 2019 death was a suicide — directly contradicting years of MAGA-fueled conspiracy theories that Epstein was murdered to protect powerful elites.
The DOJ also confirmed there was no secret “client list” of wealthy accomplices — a devastating blow to far-right influencers who’ve built entire platforms around the claim.
Despite the official findings, Greene has doubled down on her push for transparency, co-sponsoring a bipartisan resolution alongside Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and every House Democrat to force the release of unredacted files tied to Epstein’s alleged political influence network.
Pressure Mounts on Trump
Greene is even urging Trump to personally meet with Epstein’s survivors.
“I have every faith the president will side with the victims once he hears their stories face-to-face,” Greene insisted. “I just know his heart.”
But inside the White House, aides are scrambling to contain the political fallout. According to multiple sources, top Trump officials are warning GOP lawmakers not to support Greene’s legislation, fearing it could “reignite unverified conspiracies” and damage the president ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Speaker Mike Johnson added fuel to the fire Friday when he claimed Trump had “acted as an FBI informant” in the Epstein case — a statement met with widespread ridicule from both parties.
A Potential GOP Meltdown
For Democrats, the chaos offers a rare opening. Polling from late August shows that 67% of Americans — including 58% of Republicans — support the full release of Epstein-related documents.
“This is about accountability,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD). “If the government has information about who enabled Epstein, the American people deserve to see it. Period.”
Greene warned that the GOP’s refusal to act could come back to haunt them.
“This is a major misstep,” she told the Journal. “An uncalculated error that’s going to have real ramifications in the midterms.”
With Trump digging in, Greene breaking ranks, and bipartisan pressure mounting, the GOP’s civil war over Epstein may be just getting started.
