A Wizz Air Airbus A321 bound for Rome was forced to make an emergency landing Thursday morning after encountering violent turbulence that sent passengers screaming and praying in the dark.
The flight, which departed from Alicante, Spain, was just 250 miles from its destination when it flew straight into a powerful summer storm near Rome. Within minutes, the calm turned to chaos.
Videos posted to TikTok show terrified passengers shrieking as the aircraft violently rocked through thick storm clouds. One traveler, 27-year-old Julia Marino, described the scene to Italian outlet La Repubblica:
“It felt like the plane was free-falling. People were crying, holding hands, and some were praying out loud. We thought this was the end.”
The pilots, battling extreme winds and turbulence, diverted the flight to Bologna — roughly 250 miles north of Rome — where the plane landed safely.
According to Wizz Air spokesperson Silvia Chiudinelli, no one was injured during the terrifying incident.
“The airline thanks its pilots and cabin crew members for keeping everyone safe during the turbulence and for making the right decision to divert the flight to Bologna,” Chiudinelli said in a statement.
Wizz Air confirmed that all affected passengers are entitled to refunds and ground transportation to Rome.
Italy’s meteorological services remain on high alert, warning of more thunderstorms and dangerous weather conditions across the region. According to Weather Underground, severe summer storms have battered Italy and much of Europe for weeks.
Last month, flash floods in the Passiria Valley in northern Italy destroyed homes, swept away cars, and collapsed a bridge. Experts warn that extreme weather events in the region are becoming increasingly frequent due to shifting climate patterns.
As one shaken passenger summed it up after stepping off the plane:
“I’ve flown dozens of times, but I’ve never been so scared. I don’t know if I’ll ever get on a plane again.”
