President Donald Trump woke up furious on Sunday, railing against the press after his much-hyped summit with Vladimir Putin in Anchorage collapsed without results.
The two leaders met amid high global tension, with Ukraine still under brutal Russian assault and NATO allies watching nervously to see whether Trump would soften America’s stance. Instead, the talks ended in confusion and finger-pointing—leaving Trump empty-handed and the Kremlin emboldened.
“There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” Trump said in a brief post-summit statement, insisting he would speak with NATO leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the coming days. But to many, his words sounded more like spin than strategy.
According to multiple outlets, Putin dominated the talks, delivering a long lecture about “root causes” of his own invasion rather than offering concessions. No agreements were signed, no ceasefire announced, and no clear path forward was laid out.
Foreign policy experts blasted the outcome. “Trump promised to be the dealmaker-in-chief, but what we saw was a photo-op with Putin and nothing more,” said Dr. Maria Rodriguez, a professor of international relations at Georgetown University. “Meanwhile, Ukrainians continue dying every day.”
By dawn on Sunday, Trump had turned to Truth Social to vent.
“It’s incredible how the Fake News violently distorts the TRUTH when it comes to me,” Trump wrote. “I had a great meeting in Alaska on Biden’s stupid War, a war that should have never happened!!!”
In another post, he fumed: “If I got Russia to give up Moscow as part of the Deal, the Fake News, and their PARTNER, the Radical Left Democrats, would say I made a terrible mistake and a very bad deal. That’s why they are the FAKE NEWS!”
The tone of his tirade underscored what critics see as a president desperate to spin failure as victory.
Adding to the spectacle, Trump once again demanded he be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize—an obsession that has shadowed his presidency.
“Also, they should talk about the 6 WARS, etc., I JUST STOPPED!!! MAGA,” Trump posted, without evidence.
Reports from Politico revealed that Trump has even cold-called Norwegian diplomats to push for the honor. “It’s embarrassing,” one European official told the outlet. “It looks less like statesmanship and more like begging.”
The Biden administration had previously warned that Trump’s second term could give Moscow “a free hand” in Eastern Europe. After Saturday’s failed summit, those concerns are resurfacing.
“Putin knows Trump wants headlines, not hard diplomacy,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA). “And every time Trump chases a Nobel Prize, Ukraine pays the price.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials remain cautious ahead of Monday’s planned meeting in Washington. A senior Zelensky adviser told the Kyiv Post, “We are preparing to hear many promises, but Ukraine needs weapons and guarantees—not slogans.”
For Democrats, the episode is another reminder of Trump’s uneasy ties to Moscow. His first term was haunted by the fallout from Russian election interference in 2016, and critics argue that his second is shaping up to be no different.
“History is repeating itself,” said historian Douglas Brinkley. “Trump stands next to Putin, America gets nothing, and then he blames the media. We’ve seen this movie before.”
As Trump rages online, the world waits to see if his next meeting with Zelensky will deliver more than empty words. For now, the only clear winner of the Alaska summit appears to be Vladimir Putin.
