President Donald Trump’s weekend Truth Social tirade took a surreal turn when he abruptly posted a cryptic single word: “Bela.”

The 79-year-old commander-in-chief had just finished venting over scathing coverage of his poorly received meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where critics say Trump caved to Moscow instead of standing firm. Minutes later came the strange, context-free “Bela” post — which quickly went viral on the right-wing platform, racking up nearly 6,000 likes and more than 1,000 “retruths.”

“BIG PROGRESS ON RUSSIA. STAY TUNED!” Trump had boasted in an earlier post. But progress wasn’t what most Americans saw. Polls taken after the summit show a majority of voters — including independents — think Trump gave away too much and gained nothing concrete in return.

So what was “Bela”? Some of Trump’s online defenders quickly tied the slip to Belarus. Hours later, Trump did in fact praise the authoritarian strongman Alexander Lukashenko, calling him a “POWERFUL LEADER” for releasing just 16 of the more than 1,300 political prisoners swept up in Belarus’ brutal crackdown on dissent. “I HOPE THE 1300 WILL SOON BE RELEASED, ALSO!” Trump added.

But to human rights activists, the president’s cheerleading was nothing short of disgraceful. “Trump is once again legitimizing dictators who jail and torture their people while undermining America’s democratic values,” said Natalia Kaliada of the Belarus Free Theatre. “Sixteen token releases out of over a thousand is not progress. It’s a publicity stunt.”

The word “Bela” itself quickly took on a life of its own. One Trump supporter tried to give it biblical meaning, writing: “In this light, Bela embodies the hope inherent in God’s plan.” Others weren’t buying it. “Bela! Trump has lost his mind,” one critic shot back. “Stop making excuses for the old demented fool.”

The White House has not explained the meaning of the post.

For many Americans, the moment crystallized what Democrats and critics of Trump have been warning: a president who mixes authoritarian admiration with incoherent outbursts. “We’ve reached the point where a single gibberish word from Trump can dominate the news cycle — and that’s a national security risk,” said former U.S. Ambassador Michael McFaul.

Whether “Bela” was a typo, a nod to Belarus, or another sign of Trump’s unraveling, one thing is clear: his social media outbursts continue to overshadow diplomacy, leaving America guessing — and adversaries like Putin smiling.

    1. Before writing this, someone should have simply asked Trump what “bela” is… OK, sorry, I’m being too logical again…

  1. When dealing with others not everything works out as you wish. That does not mean one should not try. At least the President does try.
