Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise has quietly rejected a high-profile honor from President Donald Trump, refusing to accept a Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award that the White House had hoped would boost its celebrity cachet.
Multiple Kennedy Center insiders told The Washington Post that Trump personally wanted Cruise on this year’s honoree list — alongside KISS, country legend George Strait, Rocky star Sylvester Stallone, Broadway icon Michael Crawford, and disco diva Gloria Gaynor. But Cruise’s team reportedly told organizers the actor had “scheduling conflicts” and would not attend.
The Kennedy Center Honors, once a nonpartisan celebration of American arts and culture, has turned into a political lightning rod in Trump’s second term. Past honorees have boycotted the event or skipped the traditional White House reception to protest presidential policies.
“Tom Cruise’s decision speaks volumes,” said one entertainment industry insider familiar with the situation. “It’s not just about a date on the calendar. In this political climate, accepting an award directly from Donald Trump means you’re making a statement — whether you want to or not.”
Norman Lear set the precedent in 2017, when he accepted the honor but refused to attend the Trump White House reception, saying, “I could never turn my back on the Kennedy Center… What I’m not accepting is the @WhiteHouse reception with @realDonaldTrump.”
In Wednesday’s announcement, Trump boasted he was “98 percent involved” in selecting the honorees — an unusually hands-on claim for a president. The optics matter: the Kennedy Center Honors broadcast is a rare moment where politics and pop culture collide in primetime.
By adding Cruise, the most bankable action star in Hollywood, Trump would have landed a major public relations coup. Instead, he now faces the embarrassment of a high-profile snub.
“This president is obsessed with celebrity validation,” said cultural commentator Janelle Ruiz. “When someone like Tom Cruise says no, it cuts deeper than a policy fight. It’s personal.”
The acceptance of the award by others is already stirring controversy. On The View, co-host Ana Navarro publicly urged Gloria Gaynor to decline, calling Trump “a stain” in a viral Instagram post.
Cruise’s absence will be conspicuous when the 48th Annual Kennedy Center Honors airs December 7. By then, the actor may be deep into production on Top Gun 3 — a film Paramount is prioritizing after its blockbuster merger with Skydance.
Still, some in Hollywood believe Cruise’s no-show will resonate far beyond the soundstage.
“In a year when Trump is back in the White House, everything is political,” said the insider. “Choosing to stay away from that stage is just as loud as walking onto it.”

He’s a fool for not doing it
As the article said, Cruise simply has a scheduling conflict… Cruise is an employee and has to be at certain places at certain times…
If they refuse one President’s honor they should be banned from it entirely. Honor is an honor. Looks like he is backstabbing our military. True Americans deserve this honor only. Another Hollywood elite who just ruined his career. Self sabotage at best. Glad I didn’t see his lasted film. Better hope he has $ in bank cause he will need it like so many others.
