Barack Obama Sends Message to Texas Democrats

Former President Barack Obama is throwing his political weight behind Texas Democrats staging a bold standoff against a Trump-aligned redistricting push — one that experts say could tilt the U.S. House even further to the right before the 2026 midterms.

Speaking via video call Thursday to Democratic lawmakers who fled Texas to deny Republicans a quorum, Obama called their stand “a line in the sand for democracy.” The lawmakers have been camped out in blue-state sanctuaries — Illinois, Massachusetts, and New York — for weeks, refusing to return while Texas Republicans, backed by President Donald Trump and Governor Greg Abbott, press forward with a redistricting bill designed to give the GOP up to five extra congressional seats.

“I am so proud of the Texas House Democrats and the work that they’ve done,” Obama said in a message later posted to social media. “Their willingness to put themselves on the line to highlight the current assault on our democracy has set an example for what all of us have to do.”

Right now, Republicans hold just a seven-seat majority in the U.S. House. A gain of five seats from Texas alone would make flipping the chamber nearly impossible for Democrats in 2026.

The proposed GOP map, insiders say, surgically redraws districts to dilute the voting power of Black, Latino, and urban voters — a tactic Democrats liken to “mid-decade gerrymandering on steroids.”

California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has already threatened his own redistricting push to “offset the rigging” in Texas. “If they’re going to game the system, we’re not going to sit back,” Newsom told reporters this week.

Republicans have tried to bring the Democrats back by force. On Wednesday, an Illinois judge rejected a bid by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and House Speaker Dustin Burrows to detain the lawmakers, ruling they “failed to present a legal basis for the court.”

That legal defeat hasn’t slowed Governor Abbott, who lashed out on X: “How embarrassing. Texas Democrats mailing in their ‘demands’… FROM CHICAGO. Come back and fight like Texans rather than running and hiding like cowards.”

Abbott has vowed to keep calling special sessions until his “Texas First” agenda passes. If Friday’s session ends without a quorum, he’ll call another immediately.

The Texas House Democratic Caucus says they’ll return only if two conditions are met: the current legislative session is adjourned without passing the new map, and California proceeds with its own redistricting to counterbalance Texas.

“What happens next is entirely up to Greg Abbott,” said caucus chair Gene Wu. “We refuse to give him a quorum to pass his racist maps that silence more than 2 million Black and Latino Texans. In keeping with our promise, this special session will never make quorum again.”

In his private call with the Democrats, Obama stressed that their protest was part of a much larger battle over the future of American democracy under Trump’s presidency.

“We can’t let a systematic assault on democracy just happen and stand by,” Obama said, according to ABC News. “Because of your actions and your courage, other states are responding. This isn’t going to be resolved right away — it’s going to require the American people to understand the stakes and realize we cannot take our freedoms for granted.”

The Democrats’ quorum break has also frozen other legislation, including disaster relief measures after July’s catastrophic flooding in Texas, which killed more than 130 people. Republicans accuse them of abandoning Texans in crisis; Democrats counter that stopping what they call “election rigging” is a fight for every Texan’s future.

As the standoff drags on, both sides are betting the public will blame the other. For Democrats, it’s a gamble they hope will be remembered as a moment they refused to let Trump’s GOP rewrite the political map — literally — in their favor.
