Why Mark Zuckerberg’s Neighbors ‘Hate’ Him

For decades, Palo Alto’s Crescent Park neighborhood was the picture of California charm—tree-lined streets, eclectic homes, friendly neighbors, and lively block parties. Then Mark Zuckerberg moved in, and according to many locals, everything changed.

In the 14 years since the Facebook founder arrived, neighbors say the community has been transformed into something more like a billionaire’s fortress. Residents hardly ever see Zuckerberg himself, but they feel his presence—through endless construction, heavy surveillance, and a growing wall of real estate purchases that have pushed families out.

Neighbors say he’s turned Edgewood Drive and Hamilton Avenue into his personal Monopoly board, spending over $110 million to buy at least 11 properties, often offering double or triple their value. Some homes now sit empty in a city with one of the tightest housing markets in the country. Others have been folded into a sprawling compound complete with lush gardens, a private pickleball court, a hydrofloor pool, and even a seven-foot statue of Priscilla Chan.

Then there’s the private school. For years, one of Zuckerberg’s homes has quietly hosted 14 children and six staff members, despite city zoning rules that don’t allow a school there. Beneath the compound, he’s added 7,000 square feet of underground space—what neighbors jokingly call a “billionaire’s bat cave.” That construction alone has meant nearly a decade of trucks, noise, blocked driveways, and damaged property.

Many residents are equally frustrated by the intense security. Cameras positioned on his properties have clear views into neighboring yards. Private guards in unmarked cars keep watch, sometimes questioning people walking on public sidewalks. One neighbor says city police even blocked public parking for hours to accommodate a Zuckerberg backyard barbecue, a courtesy they’ve never seen extended to anyone else.

The parties are another sore spot. From disco-themed blowouts to Meta employee gatherings, they often mean loud music, valet parking clogging the streets, and delivery trucks turning Hamilton Avenue into a shipping dock. When residents complain, they say they rarely get a police response—though they might get “consolation” gifts from Zuckerberg’s staff, like chocolates, sparkling wine, or, in one infamous case, noise-canceling headphones.

Several longtime locals say they tried to welcome him, but any sense of neighborly connection was quickly shut down—literally. A fence that once had a gate for kids to run through was rebuilt twice, each time taller and thicker. Security cameras peered into one neighbor’s yard until he threatened to point cameras back, at which point they were quietly removed.

Critics point out that other Silicon Valley billionaires, like those in Atherton or Los Altos Hills, build their massive compounds in areas designed for privacy. Zuckerberg, they argue, chose a dense, historic neighborhood—and then remade it in his own image.

As one resident put it, “No neighborhood wants to be occupied. But that’s exactly what they’ve done. They’ve occupied our neighborhood.”
