President Donald Trump is once again flirting with political disaster — this time over a convicted sex trafficker tied to one of the most infamous scandals of the century.
Former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson, who famously took on the network over sexual harassment, issued a blunt warning on MSNBC Saturday: a pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell could ignite an uprising that even Trump’s own MAGA loyalists won’t stomach.
“There will be an insurrection,” Carlson declared. “And it won’t just be Democrats. It’ll be MAGA, it’ll be independents, it’ll be everybody. Because child sex trafficking is a line you don’t cross. Ever.”
Maxwell, 63, is serving a 20-year sentence for recruiting and grooming minors for disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein — a man Trump once called a “terrific guy” who liked women “on the younger side.” She was moved last month to a cushy, low-security federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas, after nine hours of closed-door talks with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche — Trump’s former defense attorney — and DOJ officials.
The transfer set off alarms. The Bryan facility has no guard towers, offers yoga classes, and even runs a “puppy program” for inmates. Maxwell, as a convicted sex offender, is barred from that particular perk, but critics say the move reeks of special treatment.
The timing has only fueled speculation that Trump is preparing to use his presidential pardon power — something he openly bragged about during his 2024 campaign. Maxwell’s legal team is currently appealing her conviction to the Supreme Court.
Carlson, who has worked closely with sexual assault survivors, called the idea of clemency “a slap in the face to every victim of Epstein’s network.”
“Normalizing the idea that she could walk free — it’s unforgivable,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what party you belong to. That would cross every line.”
The political risks are enormous. Trump’s base erupted in fury last month when the Justice Department and FBI concluded Epstein died by suicide in 2019 — and that no “client list” of elite abusers exists. That finding crushed a central MAGA talking point: the belief that Epstein was silenced to protect a powerful pedophile ring.
“It’s almost Shakespearean,” said political analyst Dr. Ellen Frey. “Trump fueled those conspiracies to rally his base. Now that his own DOJ has debunked them, the anger is being turned back on him. If he pardons Maxwell, it could be the ultimate betrayal in their eyes.”
Even some Republican lawmakers are urging caution behind the scenes. “I’ve got constituents who voted for Trump twice, and they’re saying they’ll never forgive him if he lets her out,” a senior GOP aide told this outlet on condition of anonymity.
For now, the White House has not confirmed any plans for a pardon. But in the Trump era, speculation alone has been enough to ignite political fires.
“If this happens,” Carlson warned, “you’ll see something this country hasn’t seen before. And it won’t be from the left — it’ll be from the people he thinks will never turn on him.”
