Phil McGraw — the TV psychologist once known for daytime therapy sessions and pop culture charm — is now President Donald Trump’s favorite “anti-woke” mascot. But in a stunning admission, Dr. Phil says he has no business talking politics at all.

“I don’t think I’m qualified to talk about politics,” McGraw told the New York Times in a recent sit-down, doubling down moments later with, “I don’t know! You’re making my point.”

The confession comes after months of high-profile appearances alongside Trump, including press events, campaign stops, and even riding shotgun with Immigration and Customs Enforcement during late-night raids in Chicago and Los Angeles. McGraw, who built a career “putting families back together,” is now literally in the business of tearing them apart — a contradiction even his friends are struggling to understand.

His new network, Merit Street Media, launched last year with the stated goal of fighting “woke” culture and defending “America’s families.” It collapsed into bankruptcy just 15 months later. Yet McGraw has kept his political brand alive by shadowing U.S. Border Czar Tom Hoffman and embedding with ICE teams. “I told them I’d have their back,” he said of his pitch to agents. “This is not a got-to job. This is a get-to job.”

But not everyone’s buying the spin. On HBO’s Real Time, host Bill Maher confronted McGraw about the apparent hypocrisy.
“You’ve spent your career reuniting families,” Maher said. “Now you’re going on raids with people who are literally separating families. Explain that.”

McGraw bristled. “Now that’s bulls–t,” he shot back, comparing immigration raids to routine police arrests. “If you arrest somebody that’s a citizen that’s committed a crime… do you think they don’t separate that family right then, right there?”

Critics say McGraw’s new gig isn’t just a bizarre career turn — it’s a calculated alignment with Trump’s hardline immigration agenda, designed to rebrand him as a conservative folk hero. “Phil McGraw is cashing in on cruelty,” said immigration advocate Maria Lopez. “He’s turned from a man who claimed to heal families into one who helps break them apart for ratings.”

For Democrats, the irony is glaring. A man with no political background, no elected office, and — by his own admission — no real grasp of policy is now helping shape public perception on some of the country’s most contentious issues. “If this is Trump’s idea of a qualified adviser,” quipped one progressive strategist, “it tells you everything you need to know about this administration.”

As Trump leans deeper into “anti-woke” celebrity alliances ahead of the 2026 midterms, Dr. Phil’s transformation from talk-show mediator to ICE raid tagalong may be one of the strangest — and most telling — political makeovers yet.
