Parts of U.S. Constitution ‘Mysteriously Vanish’

In a jaw-dropping development raising constitutional alarm bells, crucial sections of the United States Constitution have abruptly disappeared from the official government website—just as President Donald Trump’s administration openly flirts with suspending one of the nation’s oldest legal protections: habeas corpus.

Visitors to the Library of Congress-operated site Constitution.Congress.gov this week were met with broken links when trying to access Article I, Section 9 and Section 10—the very parts of the Constitution that outline limits on federal and state power, including the guarantee that detainees have the right to challenge their imprisonment in court.

The missing sections were first flagged Wednesday morning by Reddit users, prompting widespread panic and viral speculation online. Within hours, the Library of Congress scrambled to respond.

“It has been brought to our attention that some sections of Article I are missing… due to a coding error,” the Library posted on X (formerly Twitter), assuring users they were working to “resolve the issue soon.”

But the explanation hasn’t eased concerns.

According to archived snapshots from the Wayback Machine, the sections vanished sometime in early August. The exact date remains unknown. What is known is that the sections contain language that limits the federal government’s ability to detain people without due process—precisely the legal barrier that Trump officials have expressed interest in dismantling.

The timing is chilling. Just months ago, White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller told reporters the Trump administration is “actively looking” into suspending habeas corpus in immigration detention cases.

“We are exploring every legal option to address the invasion at our southern border,” Miller said during a fiery press conference in May. “The privilege of the writ of habeas corpus can be suspended in times of rebellion or invasion—and we believe this qualifies.”

Miller’s comments came amid sweeping crackdowns that have seen tens of thousands of migrants detained in sprawling, privately-run facilities across Texas, Arizona, and Florida.

Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem drew backlash after a May Senate hearing where she fumbled basic constitutional facts, claiming habeas corpus is “a right the president has to remove people from this country.”

Legal scholars were quick to pounce.

“That’s not just wrong—it’s dangerously wrong,” said Professor Miguel Estrada, a constitutional law expert at Georgetown University. “Only Congress has the power to suspend habeas corpus. The president cannot unilaterally decide who gets access to the courts and who doesn’t.”

The suspension of habeas corpus is one of the gravest constitutional acts the U.S. government can take—and it’s only happened four times in history:

• During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln suspended habeas nationwide.
• During Reconstruction, President Ulysses S. Grant suspended it in 11 South Carolina counties to stop Ku Klux Klan violence.
• In 1905, it was suspended in the Philippines during an insurrection.
• After Pearl Harbor, it was invoked in Hawaii under martial law.

Now, critics warn, the Trump administration may be preparing to add itself to that list.

The combination of vanishing constitutional text and a growing appetite among Trump loyalists to override centuries-old legal protections has alarmed civil liberties groups.

“It’s more than a coincidence,” said ACLU spokesperson Tara Whittaker. “When the parts of the Constitution that protect our most basic rights go missing—and the administration is openly talking about dismantling those rights—we should all be deeply concerned.”

Whether the disappearance was truly a coding error or something more sinister, one thing is clear: Americans are watching closely—and the Constitution is, quite literally, under review.
