In a fiery turn of global brinkmanship, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government has warned President Donald Trump to “be very, very careful” after the White House announced it had repositioned nuclear submarines in response to threats from a former Russian leader.
The dramatic standoff began when Dmitry Medvedev, a longtime Putin loyalist and deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, lashed out at Trump online—mocking him as “another Sleepy Joe” and flaunting Moscow’s nuclear capabilities in a series of incendiary posts on Telegram. Medvedev’s comments lit a fuse that Trump was all too eager to ignite.
On Truth Social, Trump fumed that he had deployed two nuclear subs to “the appropriate regions” in case “these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.” The move marked one of the most aggressive escalations of his presidency—and drew immediate concern from global observers.
But the most notable response came directly from the Kremlin.
“We urge the utmost restraint when discussing nuclear capabilities,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday. “The president of the United States should be extremely careful when engaging in nuclear rhetoric.”
Peskov went further, brushing off Trump’s announcement as posturing. “American submarines are always on alert. This is not new,” he said. “But we do not wish to get drawn into this kind of rhetoric. We know who defines foreign policy in Russia—and that’s President Putin.”
A Warning Cloaked in Diplomacy
Despite the thinly veiled rebuke, Peskov refused to confirm whether the Kremlin had asked Medvedev to back off his taunts. “Every government has individuals who take more aggressive stances,” he said. “What matters is the official position, and President Putin speaks for Russia.”
That “official position,” however, remains slippery. Though Putin recently claimed he supports a “lasting and stable peace” in Ukraine, he has consistently dismissed U.S.-led efforts to end the war, which is now dragging into its fourth year.
Trump’s Deadline Looms
Trump, who once praised Putin as a “strong leader” and applauded his invasion of Ukraine as “smart,” has grown visibly frustrated with Russia’s resistance to American ceasefire demands. After returning to office in January, Trump pledged he could stop the war “in 24 hours.”
Now, that promise is hanging by a thread. Trump initially gave Moscow 50 days to strike a deal. He then revised the deadline to “10 to 12 days” after accusing Putin of stalling. The new deadline? This Friday, August 8.
Trump’s latest ultimatum: agree to a ceasefire or face crushing economic sanctions and a ramp-up in U.S. military support to Ukraine.
Diplomacy on the Brink
Trump’s personal envoy, real estate magnate Steve Witkoff, is reportedly flying to Moscow this week for last-minute talks. But even Republican insiders admit that expectations are low.
“He’s playing a dangerous game,” a senior Democratic aide told this outlet. “We’re talking about nuclear posturing over a social media insult. That’s not strength—it’s recklessness.”
In Kyiv, officials remain cautious but hopeful. One adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the White House seems to be finally understanding the stakes.
“Trump is no longer talking about cutting Europe off,” the aide said. “Now he’s offering to arm them. That’s a big shift.”
Still, questions swirl about the submarines Trump claims to have deployed. The Pentagon has not confirmed which subs were moved or whether any were actually repositioned at all.
From Bromance to Breakdown
Trump’s relationship with Putin—once defined by mutual admiration and bizarre public praise—has now turned cold and unpredictable. As global tensions rise, many Democrats are asking a simple question: is this really the guy we want playing nuclear chicken with Russia?
One former Obama national security official put it bluntly: “The fact that Trump is using nuclear submarines as a Twitter clapback should terrify every American. This is not how you handle global security.”
With the world watching and the clock ticking toward August 8, Trump’s gamble may soon face its final test. Will Putin blink—or is the U.S. president about to lead America into a new era of Cold War-style confrontation?

All the ultra agressive actions by the worlds leaders both past and present have gained nothing but disaster for humanity.Unfortunatly our leaders have learned nothing from history !
We are learning… WWII followed WWI by a mere 20 years… 80 years without WWIII… and hopefully forever… no more Democrat presidents means fewer wars…
