President Donald Trump is facing a new wave of backlash after ordering the demolition of the historic East Wing of the White House to make room for a 90,000-square-foot “Mar-a-Lago-style” ballroom—a project the administration claims will cost at least $200 million and, critics say, will erase decades of American history to satisfy Trump’s personal tastes.

According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, construction will begin this September and is expected to be finished by the end of Trump’s term. The colossal ballroom, which will dwarf the original White House footprint, is set to host over 650 people and will “embody the president’s vision for entertaining,” according to administration officials.

The biggest casualty? First Lady Melania Trump’s office, which has been abruptly evicted from the East Wing, along with several historic offices and the White House’s only official theater. Melania, already notorious for her rare appearances in Washington, has reportedly spent most of the second Trump term at her homes in New York and Palm Beach.

“Melania has barely set foot in D.C. since Trump took office again,” noted a longtime White House staffer, who asked not to be named. “She’s become almost a ghost around here. Now her office is gone too.”

This latest “legacy project” is just the newest in a string of Trump-ordered White House renovations that have drawn condemnation from historians and lawmakers alike. The president already bulldozed the storied Rose Garden to make way for pavement, and famously covered the Oval Office in gold leaf, turning the nation’s most famous room into what many staffers call “Trump’s personal Versailles.”

“If there’s a golden surface, Trump will find a way to slap his name on it,” quipped Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD). “The White House is not Mar-a-Lago. This is America’s house, not a billionaire’s playpen.”

The White House insists that “private donors” will help pay for the $200 million price tag—double the estimate Trump floated earlier this year. But the administration refused to disclose who these backers are. Transparency advocates and ethics groups are demanding answers.

“This raises serious questions about influence-peddling,” warned Walter Shaub, former director of the Office of Government Ethics. “Who are these donors? What are they getting in return?”

Trump, now 79, was typically bombastic when asked about the project Thursday. “It’ll be a great legacy project. Beautiful views, the best ballroom, like nothing America’s ever seen. I’m doing it for the people, really,” he said. “And let’s be honest, nobody throws a party like I do.”

But Democratic leaders slammed the move as tone-deaf and self-serving.

“At a time when working families are struggling, Trump is spending hundreds of millions to turn the White House into a gold-plated casino,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. “It’s a disgrace.”

The East Wing, first built in 1902 and expanded during World War II, houses not only the first lady’s office but also vital facilities for staff and visitors. Preservationists warn the destruction could erase irreplaceable pieces of the nation’s story.

“Trump has made it clear: history is just another obstacle to bulldoze,” said presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin. “The White House is a symbol of democracy, not a monument to ego.”

Architects McCrery, Clark Construction, and AECOM have reportedly signed on for the massive job, but even insiders admit the plans change with Trump’s mood. “He’ll scrap the whole thing if he doesn’t like the wallpaper,” joked a senior adviser.

As the bulldozers line up, Americans are left asking: How much more of the people’s house will be left standing by the time this presidency ends?

  1. How would Trump be responsible for any changes made in 2021, 2023, or 2024. He was president for 20 days in 2021, and zero days in 2023 and 2024. Will nextgennews ever write an honest, unbiased article on Trump? I doubt it.

    1. Isn’t there an official Capitol Architect, who has to approve all proposed changes to historic buildings in Washington DC?? Where were the enviornmental, etc hearings to make sure that it was within bounds??
