President Donald Trump is facing a new wave of backlash after ordering the demolition of the historic East Wing of the White House to make room for a 90,000-square-foot “Mar-a-Lago-style” ballroom—a project the administration claims will cost at least $200 million and, critics say, will erase decades of American history to satisfy Trump’s personal tastes.

According to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, construction will begin this September and is expected to be finished by the end of Trump’s term. The colossal ballroom, which will dwarf the original White House footprint, is set to host over 650 people and will “embody the president’s vision for entertaining,” according to administration officials.

The biggest casualty? First Lady Melania Trump’s office, which has been abruptly evicted from the East Wing, along with several historic offices and the White House’s only official theater.
