House Republicans abruptly brought congressional business to a standstill Monday evening — all to avoid one vote: whether to publicly release the files connected to Jeffrey Epstein’s notorious sex trafficking ring.

The move immediately triggered backlash from Democrats and even a handful of Republicans, who accused GOP leadership of running interference for Donald Trump and obstructing long-promised transparency.

A Sudden Shutdown to Dodge Epstein Vote

It began with a scheduled Rules Committee meeting. Democrats planned to force a vote on a binding resolution — co-sponsored by progressive Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and libertarian-leaning Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) — that would compel the full release of Epstein-related records. But instead of debating the resolution, Republicans recessed the meeting, shut down the committee entirely, and quietly exited the Capitol.

By nightfall, it was clear: the House floor would be closed for the week.

“We’ll see you in September,” said Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), the top Democrat on the Rules Committee, slamming the gavel in frustration.

Democrats: “They’re Terrified of the Truth”

“The GOP had a choice: take a vote to release the Epstein Files or flee the building,” McGovern told reporters. “They fled. Why? What — or who — are they protecting?”

He wasn’t alone. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) lit up social media: “So let me get this straight — the Republicans shut down Congress to avoid releasing Epstein info… and now they want a 6-week vacation? What are they hiding?!”

Democratic strategist Sawyer Hackett didn’t mince words either: “It looks like Republicans in Congress are co-signing on a massive Trump cover-up.”

Even Rep. Massie, a Republican co-author of the bill, expressed his frustration: “Why not vote on the binding Massie-Khanna Epstein legislation this week @SpeakerJohnson? This shouldn’t be punted for five weeks.”

GOP Blames “Political Theater”

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) denied any attempt to cover up Epstein’s connections, insisting the House and President Trump were aligned in seeking “maximum transparency.”

“There is no daylight between House Republicans and President Trump on this,” Johnson told reporters Monday night. “We support releasing credible Epstein files. But Democrats are turning this into political gamesmanship. We won’t give them a platform for theatrics.”

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise doubled down, calling the Khanna-Massie resolution “performative” and defending a non-binding version Republicans quietly drafted behind the scenes — a measure that doesn’t actually compel any government action.

Still, the facts on the ground were hard to ignore: Republicans closed shop before Democrats could force a recorded vote. The House left town without acting on several unrelated bills — including a GOP immigration measure — all to avoid the Epstein file showdown.

Trump’s Tense Backpedal

The controversy follows a bombshell Justice Department memo released last week declaring that Epstein died by suicide in 2019 — and that no “client list” exists. The conclusion infuriated parts of Trump’s MAGA base, who for years pushed a theory that Epstein was murdered to protect powerful elites.

In private, sources say Trump fumed over the backlash. “Weaklings,” he reportedly called his own supporters, blaming “Democrat hoaxes” for duping them. But within hours, the president walked back the attack, claiming he still supported releasing “credible documents” and ordering Attorney General Pam Bondi to begin unsealing Epstein-related grand jury materials.

Even so, critics say his allies in Congress are actively working to delay or water down any public release.

What Comes Next?

The House is now expected to remain closed until after the August recess — effectively killing the Epstein vote for at least six weeks.

But the pressure isn’t going away. Massie and Khanna are already gathering signatures for a discharge petition that could force a floor vote over GOP leadership’s objections — if they can get 218 members to sign on.

“This is about public trust,” said Rep. Khanna. “We can’t let Congress — or the president — decide which crimes are too inconvenient to uncover.”

Meanwhile, as Americans watch from the sidelines, one question echoes louder by the day:

  1. Trump is crazy like a fox…He already has Obama on the Russian Hoax and TREASON, now he has the opportunity to make sure Bill Clinton is also brought to justice…Crazy like a fox

    1. One of the few times when everyone agrees with NextGen… get all of the Epstein info out there…

  2. The GOP are all Cowards and pedophiles, so many young girls sacrificed for all those scum bags. The Republican Party will never be looked at favourably as a decent fair party, but only as a Gestapo fuelled racist gang of scum bags who listen to their lying pedophile leader!!!!! May you all rot in hell..

  3. Don’t you think that when the Democrats were in power and President Trump had something to hide they would have put it in the public view ! They want to hurt Trump however they are capable to inflict injury to him? Even it’d it means lieing. So why didn’t they release the files?????

  4. What did democrats do with the files they could have released over last four years? My guess is the messed with photos and names. Why are they so hell bent on their release all of a sudden? We all know four years of messing with evidence could be what democrats have set up President Trump while keeping others out instead. I wouldn’t put it past democrats do things like this. If they can destroy evidence that proves Pelosi and Millie set up J6th then they would doctor up anything to frame President Trump. Think about it. They knew he would release the names in file because he had nothing to do with Epstein girls. Now democrats have suddenly find an other women they can pay to lie about President Trump and they suddenly want files released after their four years of nothing on Epstein while democrats in control. Can you say hoax again.
