In a blistering and rare public statement, Barack Obama has slammed President Donald Trump for falsely accusing him of orchestrating a coup during the 2016 election — calling it a “bizarre and desperate distraction” from Trump’s deepening entanglement in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
The former president, who typically avoids responding to Trump’s conspiracy-laden tirades, broke protocol Tuesday after Trump used a bilateral meeting in the Oval Office to push wild, unsubstantiated claims that Obama tried to “rig” the election — even as pressure mounts over Trump’s long-running ties to Epstein.
“Enough,” Obama’s office said in a statement.
“Our office usually does not engage with the constant stream of misinformation flowing from this White House. But these accusations are outrageous, and frankly, dangerous,” said Obama spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush. “This is nothing more than a frantic attempt to shift attention away from disturbing questions Trump refuses to answer about his relationship with a convicted sex trafficker.”
The outburst follows a damaging Wall Street Journal report last week that unearthed a salacious 2003 letter allegedly written by Trump to Epstein — complete with a crude drawing of a nude woman whose pubic hair was scribbled into the shape of the word “Trump.”
Trump has furiously denied the letter is his, claiming it’s a forgery and branding the entire Epstein saga “a Democrat hoax.” He has since filed a defamation lawsuit against the Journal and publicly urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to release grand jury testimony — a move legal experts warn could violate federal protocols.
The White House has also reportedly scrambled to set up a behind-closed-doors meeting between DOJ officials and Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate and convicted trafficker, in hopes of managing the political blowback.
Despite this, Trump remains fixated on rerouting the national conversation — this time by latching onto a newly declassified report pushed by his Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard.
Over the weekend, Gabbard released what she described as “explosive” documents — including partially redacted emails — which she claims prove that Obama-era officials “buried intelligence” and created a false narrative around Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.
“The goal was to usurp President Trump and subvert the will of the American people,” Gabbard posted on social media, calling for mass prosecutions of Obama administration figures. She provided no concrete evidence to support her claims.
Trump ran with the narrative immediately, calling it “the biggest scandal in U.S. history” and posting an AI-generated video showing a fictional Obama being arrested inside the Oval Office — a video critics decried as reckless and inflammatory.
But even some Trump loyalists are privately rattled by the Epstein story. Conservative pundits have expressed unease over newly resurfaced photos of Trump, Melania, Epstein, and Ghislaine Maxwell partying together at Mar-a-Lago in 2000.
While the president continues to claim “the Epstein files are fake news,” polls suggest that independent voters and even portions of his MAGA base want answers — especially after Trump failed to follow through on his 2020 promise to release all documents related to Epstein’s trafficking network.
“Trump said he would blow the lid off Epstein’s client list. Now he’s acting like he never met the guy,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD). “It’s no surprise he’s resorting to unhinged conspiracy theories about President Obama to deflect.”
Obama’s team reiterated that all major intelligence agencies, along with a bipartisan Senate report led by Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, concluded that Russia tried to influence the 2016 election — and no credible evidence has ever surfaced suggesting that Obama interfered with the vote count or suppressed intelligence.
“To call that treasonous is not just absurd,” Rodenbush said. “It’s part of a dangerous pattern of authoritarian behavior and deflection that has no place in a functioning democracy.”
As the Epstein investigation moves closer to the Oval Office, Democrats say they expect the Trump administration to lash out even more.
“This is classic projection,” said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. “Trump is cornered, and the country sees it. No amount of deepfake videos or conspiracy rants will erase his long history with Jeffrey Epstein.”
