Bill Cosby is mourning the sudden death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the beloved actor who played Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, after Warner tragically drowned in Costa Rica at the age of 54.

The 88-year-old former sitcom star opened up about the pain of losing Warner, calling it as devastating as losing his own children. “He was like my third child,” Cosby said in a statement released through his attorney.

Warner, best known for his role as the wisecracking teenage son on the hit series from 1984 to 1992, reportedly drowned Sunday while swimming off the coast of Playa Cocles in Costa Rica’s Limon province. According to officials, the actor was pulled out of the ocean by beachgoers but could not be revived.

Cosby praised Warner’s discipline and passion for his work, saying he was always prepared and dedicated to his craft. “He was never afraid to study his lines and he carried himself with professionalism, even while navigating his teenage years in the spotlight,” Cosby recalled.

Their last conversation happened about three months ago, when Warner shared his excitement over a concert he was preparing for in Minnesota. “He was proud of something he’d written,” Cosby said. “It was about living in America.”

The death hits especially hard for Cosby, who lost his own son, Ennis, to gun violence in 1997, and his daughter, Ensa, just two weeks before his 2018 sexual assault trial. His attorney acknowledged the emotional toll of Warner’s passing: “This is a man who has had to bury his own children, and now the man who played his on-screen son. It’s heartbreaking.”

Cosby also spoke with Phylicia Rashad, who played Claire Huxtable, as the former cast members process the shocking loss.

Warner’s decades-long career extended beyond The Cosby Show, with notable roles in Malcolm & Eddie, Listen Up, Reed Between the Lines, Jeremiah, and The Resident. He was known for blending humor with heart and often drew praise for the maturity he brought to his roles.

At the time of his death, Warner had been vacationing alone. Authorities confirmed that the incident was accidental, with strong currents contributing to the tragedy.

Meanwhile, Cosby, once one of America’s most cherished comedians, remains a polarizing figure. He served three years behind bars after being convicted of sexual assault in 2018, but the conviction was overturned on appeal in 2021. Dozens of women have publicly accused him of misconduct, which he continues to deny.

Despite his tarnished legacy, Cosby’s grief over Warner’s death appears sincere. “He was more than a co-star,” said his attorney. “He was family.”
