Elderly Man, 77, Killed Trying to Save Turtle on Florida Highway

In a heartbreaking act of compassion turned fatal, a 77-year-old man from Vermont was struck and killed while trying to rescue a turtle from the middle of Florida’s I-95 on Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened just before 4:30 p.m. on July 6, as heavy holiday traffic moved through Indian River County on the southbound side of the interstate. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the elderly man pulled over to the right shoulder after spotting the turtle on the roadway.

What followed was a chain of tragic missteps.

The man exited his vehicle and attempted to cross the busy highway on foot to reach the turtle. A 2020 Mazda CX-9, traveling in the center lane, slowed down to avoid hitting him—but the driver of a 2020 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup behind it didn’t react in time.

The Dodge slammed into the back of the Mazda, sending it careening off the road and into a nearby fence. The impact also threw the Vermont man—who had just made it into the lanes—across the pavement, killing him instantly.

“He was just trying to do something good,” said a Florida Highway Patrol source familiar with the investigation. “He didn’t deserve to die like that.”

His family, who had been traveling with him, witnessed the entire event. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man has not been publicly identified, pending official notification of extended relatives. No one else was seriously injured in the crash. The driver of the Dodge was a 53-year-old man from Port St. Lucie. The SUV was driven by a 44-year-old woman from Miami and had a male passenger, age 49, also from Miami.

The turtle was reportedly a gopher tortoise, a species protected under Florida law due to its ecological importance. Gopher tortoises dig burrows that serve as homes to hundreds of other animals, and it’s illegal to harm or harass them.

Florida highways, particularly I-95, have long been dangerous corridors for both wildlife and pedestrians. “This tragedy highlights the real risks of stopping on high-speed roadways, even with the best intentions,” said a spokesperson for Florida’s Department of Transportation.

As investigators piece together the final details, officials are reminding the public to never enter busy highways on foot and to call authorities for animal rescues.

“Sometimes doing the right thing can be deadly,” the trooper said. “We urge people to use caution—and call for help.”
