Officer Shot in Neck as Armed Mob Storms ICE Detention Center in Texas

A coordinated, violent ambush unfolded late Friday night at the Prairieland ICE Detention Facility in Texas, where a police officer was shot in the neck and over a dozen masked attackers launched a full-blown assault on federal property.

The chilling event is now under federal investigation, and authorities fear it may be part of a growing nationwide campaign of violence against immigration enforcement.

Just before 11 p.m. local time, Alvarado police were dispatched to the Prairieland facility after receiving reports of a suspicious armed individual.

According to law enforcement sources, what initially appeared to be a lone prowler quickly escalated into a coordinated attack when multiple suspects opened fire on the responding officer.

The officer—whose name has not been released—was shot in the neck and rushed to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth. He survived and was released Saturday evening.

“Had the bullet been half an inch the other way, we’d be talking about a funeral,” said a senior Johnson County official familiar with the investigation.

According to CBS News and a federal law enforcement source, at least a dozen individuals dressed in black and wearing tactical gear—including body armor—arrived in a convoy of vehicles. Security footage, since seized by federal agencies, reportedly shows suspects vandalizing cars and ICE property and launching fireworks, which investigators believe were used to lure officers into a kill zone.

Eight suspects were arrested on-site, but the FBI believes more may be at large.

“This wasn’t a protest. It was a paramilitary-style assault on federal officers,” one DHS source told this outlet on condition of anonymity.

The attack comes just days after President Donald Trump signed the controversial One Big Beautiful Bill, a sweeping immigration law that triples ICE funding and authorizes mass deportations. Critics have called it draconian. Supporters say it’s long overdue.

Protests erupted nationwide in response, most notably in Portland, Oregon, where federal officers clashed with demonstrators outside a DHS building on the Fourth of July. According to officials, the Portland demonstration included fireworks, graffiti, and attempts to breach a federal perimeter.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche didn’t mince words: “The Department has zero tolerance for assaults on federal officers or property. We will bring the full weight of the law against those responsible.”

In a post on X, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem revealed that assaults on ICE officers have skyrocketed by nearly 700% in recent months. She warned: “If you obstruct or assault our law enforcement, this administration will hunt you down and you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Noem has reportedly requested a surge in National Guard support for key federal detention centers.

While federal agencies work to identify the rest of the assailants, sources say Prairieland and similar facilities are now on heightened alert. DHS and ICE operations are expected to continue “without hesitation,” according to a White House statement issued late Sunday night.

Local law enforcement has expressed frustration at the growing threat. “We’re not just dealing with angry activists anymore,” one Texas Ranger said. “This is organized domestic terrorism.”
