Just months before a bloody ambush left Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband dead in their own home, a secret DHS memo had already sounded the alarm: America’s elected officials were becoming sitting targets.
The leaked Homeland Security analysis, quietly circulated in March and obtained by ABC News, warned of a disturbing shift—violent extremists increasingly abandoning government buildings and instead zeroing in on lawmakers’ private residences, where security is weaker and retaliation can strike in silence.
On Saturday morning, that warning became a terrifying reality.
A Targeted Political Hit
Around 3:30 a.m. on June 14, police conducting a welfare check at Hortman’s suburban Minneapolis home were met with gunfire. Moments earlier, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife had been shot multiple times in a nearby neighborhood in Champlin. The two survived after emergency surgery, but officials remain “cautiously optimistic” about their recovery.
Governor Tim Walz didn’t mince words: “This was an act of targeted political violence.”
The gunman—dressed to mimic a police officer—left behind a fake squad car rigged with flashing lights and, more chillingly, a “hit list” of lawmakers, according to law enforcement sources cited by ABC News.
The list named “many lawmakers,” suggesting a larger, coordinated plan to assassinate multiple public officials.
Missed Warnings, Deadly Consequences
The DHS memo, written by counterterrorism analysts, pointed to an “uptick in online chatter promoting attacks at officials’ homes, doxing campaigns, swatting incidents, and real-world violence.” The report emphasized that homes lack the layered protections of public buildings and are “accessible with limited obstacles.”
And it wasn’t just about security gaps—the document also blamed America’s surging political extremism. It cited a “toxic mix” of conspiracy theories and radicalization that have made it harder for authorities to anticipate attacks. It specifically noted that officials were being demonized in fringe media circles and online echo chambers.
History Repeats Itself
The Saturday killings bear grim resemblance to other attacks on Democratic figures in recent years.
In 2022, Paul Pelosi—husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi—was brutally beaten in their San Francisco home by a man obsessed with right-wing conspiracy theories. In Michigan, two men were convicted for plotting to kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer from her vacation home during COVID-era political unrest.
Melissa Hortman was no stranger to the national stage. A progressive voice in Minnesota politics, she served as House Speaker until 2023 and remained an influential advocate for education and healthcare reform. Her husband, Mark, was not involved in politics.
Now both are dead.
The Aftermath—and What’s Next
The shooter remains on the run, though police believe they are closing in. Sources say digital evidence from the fake police cruiser could lead to a breakthrough.
“This was calculated. This was planned. And this was political,” said a senior law enforcement source, speaking anonymously because the investigation is ongoing.
Meanwhile, questions are mounting over whether federal agencies did enough to prevent what they clearly saw coming.
“The memo was right there,” said one Democratic strategist. “It predicted everything. And nothing was done.”
As the nation reels from yet another politically motivated act of violence, lawmakers—especially Democrats—are once again looking over their shoulders.
This time, it’s not just rhetoric. It’s war at home.
