Bulldozers rumbled into the White House Rose Garden this week, ripping up one of America’s most iconic spaces to make room for what President Donald Trump has called a “beautiful” new patio—complete with twin flagpoles and, eventually, a $100 million ballroom.

What was once a symbol of American diplomacy and tradition has become the latest casualty of Trump’s obsession with personal branding and Mar-a-Lago aesthetics. The project, which began Monday under the direction of the National Park Service, is expected to be completed by mid-August.

“This is about legacy. My legacy,” Trump told reporters during a brief appearance near the construction zone. “People don’t want to walk through wet grass. It’s a disaster. The Rose Garden’s been broken for a long time—just like everything else I had to fix in Washington.”

Paving Over History

The Rose Garden, redesigned by Jacqueline Kennedy and horticulturist Rachel Lambert Mellon in the 1960s, has served as a backdrop for some of America’s most defining political moments. Presidents from both parties have used it for bill signings, press briefings, and state ceremonies. Now, it’s being reshaped into a concrete-heavy extension of Trump’s Florida resort.

“It’s like he’s trying to turn the White House into a wedding venue,” said one former National Park Service employee who spoke on condition of anonymity. “It’s not about function or respect for history. It’s about appearances and ego.”

A Garden for the People, Now for the President

Trump’s rationale? High heels and mud.

During a Fox News segment in March, Trump claimed, “The grass just doesn’t work. Women fall. It’s not safe. And frankly, it doesn’t look very good on camera.”

Critics say that excuse is as flimsy as the justification for cutting down a historic magnolia tree planted outside the Oval Office to honor John F. Kennedy Jr. That tree was removed last month and replaced with a smaller, camera-friendly specimen.

Flagpoles and Future Ballrooms

As part of the current overhaul, Trump is installing two new flagpoles—personally funded, he claims—to complement the existing flags already flown atop the White House. “The grounds have needed flagpoles for 200 years,” he said. “We’re finally getting it right.”

But insiders say that’s just the beginning. Trump has also pushed plans to construct a grand ballroom modeled after the one at Mar-a-Lago. Estimated price tag? $100 million.

“He’s laying the groundwork—literally—for a future Trump-branded White House,” said presidential historian Carla Monroe. “This isn’t preservation. It’s erasure.”

Melania’s Controversial Garden Touch-Up Returns

This isn’t the first time the Rose Garden has been reworked under Trump. In 2020, First Lady Melania Trump unveiled a minimalist redesign of the same space, which drew widespread criticism and spurred online petitions demanding its reversal. Many saw it as a sterile departure from the lush and colorful spirit of the Kennedy-era design.

From Camelot to Concrete

“Jackie Kennedy fought to make the White House a cultural beacon,” said civic landscape advocate Tom Raines. “Trump is bulldozing that legacy, one petal at a time.”

As construction continues, the question hangs heavy over the National Mall: When does a renovation become a desecration?

“Soon there won’t be anything left to preserve,” said a former White House staffer. “Only things to pave.”
