A quiet Tuesday night in Phoenix turned into a nightmare after a 9-year-old boy fatally shot his 5-year-old sister with an unsecured AR-style rifle—allegedly left within reach in their bedroom. Now, their father, a convicted felon, faces serious charges and a community is left grappling with yet another child’s death in America’s gun crisis.
A Preventable Loss
Authorities say Irvin Ramos-Jimenez, 33, was outside his home around 6:30 p.m. when he heard a single, deafening gunshot. Moments later, he burst into his son’s bedroom to find his daughter bleeding from a wound to her chest.
Instead of calling 911 immediately, Ramos-Jimenez and his girlfriend reportedly drove the little girl to a nearby psychiatric center—an unusual choice given the emergency. She was transferred to an ambulance there but died of her injuries.
He later admitted to police that the weapon, an AR-style rifle, had been stored “on the top shelf” of the boy’s closet—loaded, unsecured, and within the child’s reach. Ramos-Jimenez, who has a 2021 felony conviction for drug trafficking, is legally barred from owning firearms. Nonetheless, he told investigators he purchased the rifle “through a private sale for personal protection.”
“He Shouldn’t Have Had That Gun”
Phoenix police arrested Ramos-Jimenez late Tuesday on charges of illegal possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. More charges may follow, as detectives piece together the full timeline and circumstances.
“This is an unthinkable tragedy,” said Phoenix Police Sgt. Robert Scherer in a statement. “This little girl should be alive today. We’re urging every gun owner: lock up your weapons. A closet shelf is not a gun safe.”
The identity of the children is being withheld for privacy reasons, but neighbors describe the family as “quiet” and “kept to themselves.” Still, some had concerns.
“I always saw the kids playing out front alone,” said neighbor Jessica L., a mother of three. “It breaks my heart, but I’m not surprised something bad happened. That man wasn’t fit to have children, let alone guns.”
A National Pattern of Negligence
This tragedy isn’t isolated. According to Everytown for Gun Safety, children in the U.S. have unintentionally shot themselves or others at least 66 times in 2025 so far, resulting in 30 deaths—and we’re barely halfway through the year.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists firearms as the leading cause of death for American children and teens, surpassing motor vehicle accidents. In 2023 alone, there were over 400 unintentional shootings by children, the worst year on record.
Experts say these numbers are directly tied to unsafe storage practices, easy access to high-powered weapons, and lack of accountability for gun-owning adults.
“There is no excuse for this,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “When a 9-year-old can find and fire a loaded military-style rifle, the system has failed.”
A Broken System and a Broken Family
Ramos-Jimenez is now in custody and could face years behind bars. Meanwhile, his 9-year-old son—who accidentally pulled the trigger—will have to live with the consequences of a moment that should never have been possible.
This case reignites calls for universal background checks, mandatory safe storage laws, and the closure of private-sale loopholes—measures that enjoy broad public support but remain blocked in Congress by Republican opposition.
“There’s no freedom in burying a 5-year-old,” Watts said. “And no Second Amendment right should override a child’s right to live.”
As the community mourns, advocacy groups are demanding action—not just prayers. Another child is dead, another family destroyed—and the weapon that did it was legally forbidden in the first place.

I have always said guns don’t kill, people do. This just proves that statement. That weapon no matter the kind did not jump down off the shelf and shoot the little girl, her brother did. Daddy never should have had the weapon in the first place. Daddy needs to be charged with murder and spend his life in prison. I find it funny that we post and scream about a shooting by accident yet say nothing about the murders PP commits every day. Death is death and murder is murder no matter who dose it.

Remember. Guns do not kill unless the trigger is pulled by a person, or it’s dropped on the ground viciously. All the gun laws or confiscation laws will NOT prevent someone from having/getting a gun. Checks are done when you purchase a firearm. This is a prime case–a felon, bought his firearm from a “private owner”.. . and was negligent in keeping it from his child. THINK ABOUT THAT!
The fact that a convicted felon was able to buy a gun should prove that the criminals will always have guns, while the anti gun advocates want to take the right to own a gun away from law abiding citizens leaving us vulnerable to the criminals. The problem is idiot adults who don’t secure their guns and don’t properly educate their children.
