In a political clash that’s rapidly turning nuclear, Elon Musk detonated a shocking allegation against President Trump on Thursday—publicly accusing him of being named in the suppressed files of convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
“Time to drop the really big bomb,” Musk posted on X, formerly Twitter. “@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!”
The post—read by tens of millions within hours—came at the tail end of a social media firestorm between the two billionaires, a feud that now threatens to reshape power dynamics in Washington, tech, and Wall Street.
Behind the Blowup
The verbal slugfest escalated after Trump lashed out at Musk earlier Thursday, threatening to axe billions in federal subsidies to Tesla and SpaceX. Musk, whose companies have become central to the U.S. electric vehicle and space economy, didn’t just push back—he blew the roof off.
According to a former senior official in the Biden administration, the drama “has all the fingerprints of a personal and political fallout, not a policy dispute.”

The feud comes at a precarious time for Trump’s legislative ambitions. His latest bill—dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill”—includes sweeping tax cuts aimed at tipping wages, overtime, and even Social Security. But with Musk now threatening to sink support from market-minded lawmakers, the bill could stall.
A Democratic staffer summed it up bluntly: “Trump bet big on Musk. Now Musk is using Trump’s own playbook against him. If this spirals, it’s not just about Epstein—it’s about political survival.”
What Comes Next?
While the White House has yet to issue a formal response, Trump’s campaign staff was seen scrambling late Thursday to manage the fallout.
Asked by reporters whether he planned to declassify the full Epstein files if re-elected, Trump repeated a line from last fall: “I have no problem with that. None. I’ve said I wasn’t involved. Never went to the island. But if people want to see it—sure.”
