A political rally in western Pennsylvania is making headlines not for policy — but for football. President Donald Trump was presented with a personalized Pittsburgh Steelers jersey last week, triggering a storm of backlash among the team’s loyal fanbase.

The jersey, emblazoned with the number 47 — a nod to Trump’s bid to become the 47th president — was handed over by Vietnam veteran and Steelers legend Rocky Bleier during Trump’s campaign stop in West Mifflin on May 30. Standing beside Bleier were current Steelers players Mason Rudolph and Myles Killebrew, as Trump touted a massive steel tariff hike and lavished praise on the team.

“I’m a fan of your Steelers,” Trump told the crowd, before turning to Rudolph. “I think he’s going to get a big shot. He’s tall, he’s handsome, he’s got a great arm. I have a feeling he’s going to be the guy.”

But many fans weren’t cheering.

Fan Fallout: “Not In Our Name”

Soon after the event, emails began pouring into Steelers HQ — and they weren’t thank-you notes. Fans expressed frustration and anger that team imagery and players were being associated with Trump’s reelection campaign, with some questioning whether the organization had formally endorsed him.

In response, the Steelers issued a statement clarifying that “the views of current and former players do not necessarily reflect those of the Pittsburgh Steelers organization.”

The team confirmed that the jersey presentation was not coordinated or authorized by management.

“I’m a lifelong Steelers fan, but I was shocked to see the jersey used as a campaign prop,” said Angela Holloway, a school counselor from Mt. Lebanon. “This franchise has always stood for community — not political theater.”

Players on the Spot

Quarterback Mason Rudolph addressed the controversy Tuesday after a voluntary workout, saying he was aware of the blowback but didn’t take it personally.

“That’s the nature of social media,” he said. “That’s the nature of why America is so great. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Speech is free. Par for the course.”

Rudolph’s remarks attempted to strike a neutral tone, though many online called the appearance tone-deaf — especially given Trump’s polarizing record and recent rhetoric.

Killebrew has not commented publicly.

A Pattern of Partisan Crossovers

This isn’t the first time Trump has cozied up to Steelers past and present. In 2024, he was photographed alongside former stars Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell during campaign stops. Neither player has publicly endorsed a candidate.

Still, the image of Trump holding a black-and-gold jersey on stage has reopened a complicated conversation about politics and sports — particularly in Pennsylvania, a crucial swing state.

Ironically, the Steelers also have deep Democratic ties. Dan Rooney, the team’s late owner and a revered figure in Pittsburgh, served as U.S. ambassador to Ireland under President Barack Obama. Rooney was also instrumental in the creation of the NFL’s “Rooney Rule,” which aimed to increase diversity in leadership.

“The Steelers have always stood for progress and inclusion — not political division,” said Malik Ford, a retired high school coach and lifelong fan. “That jersey moment felt like a betrayal.”

Trump Leans Into Steel Country

Trump used the rally to announce a 50% tariff on imported steel, a move aimed squarely at Pennsylvania’s blue-collar voters.

“We’re bringing steel back — big league,” he told the cheering crowd. “And we love our Steelers, don’t we?”

But for many fans, that love now feels complicated.

As election season heats up, the black-and-gold brand may find itself walking a tightrope — between honoring its legacy and staying above the political fray.

    1. Most football fans are MAGA and Steelers just got two Top Players Heroes from National Champions: Ohio State Buckeyes!

  1. What the heck are you talking about? Here’s some stupid quotes from your article;
“ a nod to Trump’s bid to become the 47th president” TRUMP IS ALREADY THE ELECTED 47th PRESIDENT!!
    Or
“… being associated with Trump’s reelection campaign” THERE IS NO RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN he’s already been elected and can’t run again!!
    Or
“ …shocked to see the jersey used as a campaign prop…” THERE IS NO CAMPAIGN HES ALREADY ELECTED!
    Or
“ …As election season heats up…” THERE IS NO PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION SEASON HEATING UP-he just was elected!
    Or
“ ….particularly in Pennsylvania, a crucial swing state…” YES IT WAS A CRUCIAL SWING STATE WHICH TRUMP WON DECISIVELY!

Now how can all of those quotes above be in the same article which has this truthful statement (quoted below) which could only be made AFTER Trump was elected and is THE PRESIDENT!
“ Trump used the rally to announce a 50% tariff on imported steel, a move aimed squarely at Pennsylvania’s blue-collar voters.
“”We’re bringing steel back — big league,”” Trump told the cheering crowd”

THATS TRUMP ACTUALLY DELIVERING ON CAMPAIGN PROMISES!! Something few politicians actually do!!

I know nextgennews hates Trump and you want to slant the stories against Trump but this was such a horrible job of non-facts how can you call yourselves news people!!

  2. This outrage is positively not waranted. If He was given and Eagles Jersey, or Bengals Jersey–think about it>
