Furious Trump Vows Payback After ‘Order’ is Ignored by California

In an extraordinary outburst that has reignited America’s culture wars, President Donald Trump vowed Tuesday to slap California with sweeping federal fines after a transgender teenager won multiple titles at a state high school track and field championship.

Trump, who has made targeting LGBTQ+ rights a hallmark of his second term, lashed out on his Truth Social platform, writing, “A Biological Male competed in California Girls State Finals, WINNING BIG, despite the fact that they were warned by me not to do so… Large scale fines will be imposed!!!”

The target of Trump’s fury is 16-year-old AB Hernandez, a transgender girl who won both the high jump and triple jump over the weekend. Her wins, while legal under California law, have ignited a firestorm on the right—led, as usual, by Trump.

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the state’s high school sports authority, had even attempted a compromise before the event. According to The New York Times, CIF had proposed allowing girls who placed behind Hernandez to share the podium. But that wasn’t enough for the president, who had already threatened to yank federal funding if Hernandez was allowed to compete.

Legal, but Loathed by Trump

California law has protected gender identity under its anti-discrimination statutes for years. Since 2013, CIF has allowed students to compete in alignment with their gender identity. Legal experts say Trump’s threatened fines have no clear legal basis.

“This is political bluster, pure and simple,” said UCLA law professor Kendra Wyatt. “The federal government cannot punish a state for following its own anti-discrimination laws, especially when those laws are in line with Supreme Court precedent.”

Still, Trump’s Justice Department is pushing forward. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon sent a letter Monday to every public school district in California, denouncing the policy and warning that it could lead to lawsuits. In the letter, Dhillon repeatedly referred to Hernandez as a “male” and accused the state of violating equal protection laws.

From Podium to Punching Bag

The teen athlete at the center of the controversy has not spoken publicly, but friends say she’s stunned by the backlash.

“She trained like hell for this,” said Jasmine Vega, a friend of Hernandez’s from school. “Now she’s being used as a political punching bag. It’s disgusting.”

The outcry from conservatives has turned what should’ve been a celebratory moment for a young athlete into a national flashpoint. Trump’s allies have seized on the issue to rally their base—once again drawing a bright line between red-state resentment and blue-state policy.

Trump’s Broader Anti-Trans Agenda

Trump’s comments come just months after he signed an executive order banning transgender athletes from girls’ and women’s sports nationwide. That order is currently being challenged in federal courts.

Earlier this year, Trump also ordered federal agencies to define sex strictly as male or female, revoking Obama-era protections for transgender Americans. He’s also attempted to purge transgender service members from the military—sparking a fierce backlash from advocacy groups and civil rights attorneys.

“Donald Trump is doing everything he can to turn trans kids into political targets,” said Human Rights Campaign president Kelley Robinson. “He’s not protecting fairness in sports. He’s fueling hate.”

Political Distraction or Policy Priority?

Critics say the timing of Trump’s tirade is no coincidence. With inflation on the rise, job growth slowing, and his latest budget under fire even from within his own party, Trump’s focus on a teenage athlete is being viewed as a calculated distraction.

“Trump knows exactly what he’s doing,” said political strategist Reed Ingram. “He’s playing to fear, not facts. It’s an old playbook—and sadly, it still works with his base.”

Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom, a frequent Trump adversary, issued a short but sharp response: “We don’t take legal threats from wannabe strongmen seriously. California will continue to stand for equality, even if Washington won’t.”

The showdown is far from over—and for one teenage girl who just wanted to jump, the national stage has become a battlefield.
