Hollywood star Ellen Pompeo says TSA agents called in the bomb squad after finding a suspicious snack in her carry-on — a bag of fancy sunflower seeds.
It wasn’t a script from Grey’s Anatomy — it was real life.
Ellen Pompeo, best known for playing Dr. Meredith Grey on the long-running medical drama, found herself in a bizarre standoff with TSA at the airport in March. The reason? A bag of high-end sunflower seeds from Erewhon Market.
“They literally held me for an hour,” Pompeo, 55, told Travel + Leisure in a newly surfaced interview. “They brought the bomb squad in — over Erewhon sunflower seeds. I was like, is this a prank show? Where’s Ashton Kutcher?”
The Snack That Launched a Security Scare
Pompeo said she was traveling solo and had packed the trendy organic snack for her flight. But when her bag went through screening, TSA flagged it. The security team then reportedly escalated the situation, believing the packaging might contain chemical traces.
“It was unopened, I offered to throw them out,” she said. “But they said, ‘No, you have to wait — the bomb squad is on the way.’”
She described frantically texting her publicist while waiting near the gate. “I might not get on this plane,” she warned. “And you’re never gonna guess why.”
A Mother’s Pre-Flight Ritual Interrupted
To make matters worse, Pompeo is a nervous flier. She said the ordeal left her shaken — and almost stranded.
“I like to hold my kids’ hands when I take off,” she confessed. “It calms me down, probably stresses them out, but that’s what moms do.”
Pompeo shares three children with music producer Chris Ivery: Stella Luna, 15, Sienna May, 10, and Eli Christopher, 8. The couple has been married since 2007.
Pompeo’s Kids Are Fans — Sort Of
While Ellen is a household name thanks to Grey’s Anatomy, her own family isn’t exactly glued to the screen.
“My husband doesn’t watch it. That’s probably how we’ve stayed married so long,” she joked during a recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show. “He’s too busy with sports.”
As for the kids?
“Stella tried,” Pompeo said. “But once George O’Malley died, she was done. That was her breaking point.”
Sienna May has also started asking to watch the show — but mom’s not quite ready.
“She’s only 10. And I’m not ready for her to see me in my underwear on TV. But apparently all her classmates already have. So that’s a fun school pick-up conversation.”
Hollywood Star, Real-Life Drama
The incident may seem absurd — but it’s not entirely unheard of. Erewhon Market, the ultra-exclusive grocery chain favored by LA’s elite, is notorious for its overpriced health foods. Some products come in high-gloss biodegradable packaging that’s unfamiliar to TSA scanners.
Still, Pompeo’s brush with airport security reminds us that no one — not even a TV icon — is immune to the chaos of post-9/11 air travel.
And yes, she made her flight. But the sunflower seeds did not.
“I never saw them again,” Pompeo said. “Rest in peace, Erewhon seeds. You were too expensive to go out like that.”
