In a jaw-dropping moment during a White House press conference on Friday, President Donald Trump left the door wide open to pardoning embattled hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs — who is currently facing federal sex trafficking and racketeering charges that could land him in prison for life.

The comment came after Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked Trump if he would consider issuing a pardon. Instead of giving a straight answer, Trump launched into his usual self-referential deflection.

“Well, nobody’s asked. You had to be the one to ask, Peter,” Trump said with a smirk. “I know people are thinking about it. First of all, I’d look at what’s happening. I haven’t spoken to him in years. He really liked me a lot.”

A ‘Good Guy’?

The idea that Trump might entertain the possibility of letting Diddy off the hook is already sending shockwaves. Combs is accused of orchestrating a years-long criminal enterprise involving sex trafficking, prostitution, and drug-fueled abuse, with multiple alleged victims now testifying against him in federal court.

Yet Trump, standing just steps from the Oval Office, reminisced fondly about the disgraced music mogul, calling him a former “friend” and suggesting past loyalty might still carry weight.

“I haven’t followed the trial that closely,” Trump admitted, “but I know it’s big. It’s getting a lot of coverage.”

That’s one way to put it. The Diddy scandal has dominated headlines for weeks, with shocking video evidence, high-profile raids, and now possible presidential interference.

Tangled Histories

The Trump-Diddy relationship dates back to New York’s glitzy tabloid era of the ‘90s and early 2000s. Trump appeared on Celebrity Apprentice calling Combs a “good guy,” and the two were often seen together at lavish Manhattan parties.

But by Trump’s account, the relationship “busted up” when he entered politics. Still, that didn’t stop him from floating the idea that he might step in if he believes Diddy has been “mistreated.”

“This Is Who He Is”

Critics didn’t hold back.

“Trump just REFUSED to rule out giving a pardon to Diddy,” political commentator Harry Sisson posted on X. “Yes, you read that correctly. What on earth is wrong with this guy???”

Others were quick to connect the dots between Trump’s growing list of eyebrow-raising clemency moves and his latest musing. He’s already pardoned reality TV criminals, violent January 6 rioters, and recently said he’d “look into” pardoning the men convicted in the 2020 plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

“Trump is sending a clear message,” said Rep. Jasmine Cole (D-MI). “He has no regard for victims, no respect for justice, and no hesitation about abusing presidential power to help his celebrity friends.”

What’s Next

Combs’ trial continues in Manhattan federal court, with prosecutors preparing to present testimony from over a dozen witnesses. The trial is expected to last through the summer. If convicted, Combs could spend the rest of his life in prison.

As for Trump, the optics of even entertaining a pardon in a high-profile sex trafficking case could haunt him — unless, of course, that’s exactly the kind of chaos he’s counting on.
