A heartbreaking scene unfolded on Memorial Day in Laguna Beach, California, after a driving lesson between a father and his teenage daughter took a deadly turn—ending with their car plunging 40 feet off a cliff.

According to Laguna Beach Police, 64-year-old Robert Delgado was teaching his 15-year-old daughter how to drive in the parking lot above Coast Highway near Gelson’s Market when tragedy struck. At some point during the lesson, the vehicle barreled through a fence and careened down a steep embankment, crashing onto the sidewalk below.

Delgado was pronounced dead at the scene. His daughter, who was driving with a learner’s permit, suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover. Authorities say she remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Lt. Jesse Schmidt of the Laguna Beach Police Department called the incident “an unspeakable tragedy.”

“This was a father trying to do something every parent understands—teaching his child to drive,” Schmidt said. “It ended in a moment no family ever wants to imagine. The entire community is mourning with this family.”

Aerial footage aired by KCAL News showed the mangled vehicle flipped on its roof beside the coastal highway. Debris was scattered across the sidewalk, a stark contrast to what had been a routine father-daughter outing just moments earlier.

Investigators believe “gas pedal-brake pedal confusion” may have been the cause of the crash. While not uncommon in novice drivers, this type of error can have devastating consequences in areas like Laguna Beach, where narrow roads and steep drop-offs pose a unique danger.

Police are still investigating, but no charges have been announced.

Experts say this tragic event is a chilling reminder of how high the stakes can be during early driving lessons.

“Driving education is a rite of passage for many families,” said Denise Halloran, a California-based traffic safety instructor. “But it’s crucial for new drivers to learn in secure environments, far from traffic or steep terrain. A parking lot perched on a bluff—no matter how empty—can be a riskier setting than it appears.”

Delgado, described by neighbors as a “devoted father” and “quiet but kind,” leaves behind a grieving family reeling from the accident.

“They were always together,” one resident told reporters. “He’d do anything for that girl. It’s just so sad.”

The city of Laguna Beach is expected to conduct a review of safety barriers in the area in light of the crash.

“This was a father’s final act of love,” Schmidt said. “And that’s what we must remember.”

  1. A real sad story that needs distribution. Poor choice of training site and slow/ non reaction from Dad. You just can’t be too safe or cautious. Went through the same scenario with an XKE stick shift and big Oleander thank goodness.
