A major manhunt is underway in New Orleans after 11 inmates—described as armed and dangerous—escaped from the Orleans Parish Jail early Friday morning. Authorities say the prisoners slipped out just after midnight and weren’t discovered missing until a routine headcount at 8:30 a.m.
The jailbreak has sent shockwaves through the city. The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed the escape and locked down the jail as local, state, and federal law enforcement scrambled to respond.
One of the escapees, Kendall Myles, has already been recaptured after being spotted by a surveillance camera in downtown New Orleans. Facial recognition technology helped identify him, and he was taken into custody without further incident after a brief foot chase.
But the remaining 10 inmates are still on the loose—and authorities believe they’re still somewhere in the New Orleans area.
“These men are violent offenders,” warned New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick during a Friday press conference. She confirmed that all the escapees were being held on the same tier, with many facing murder or other serious charges.
