The hosts of The View are calling out what they describe as a politically motivated smear campaign aimed at former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, after ex-host Meghan McCain pushed discredited rumors about their marriage on her podcast.

“Frankly, it’s garbage,” said co-host Ana Navarro on Friday’s episode. “And it’s being pushed by people who clearly want to take down what the Obamas represent—grace, stability, and class in public service.”

McCain, the show’s former conservative lightning rod, sparked controversy in January when she claimed on her podcast that “reputable people” and “serious journalists” told her the Obamas were heading for divorce. She provided no names. No evidence. Just gossip—seemingly rooted in wishful thinking.

“If they break up,” McCain speculated, “it’ll be like a metaphorical last arrow in the heart of the Democratic brand.” Her implication: the Obamas’ personal lives are fair game if it means damaging the party she’s spent years attacking.

But her former co-hosts weren’t having it.

“This isn’t journalism. It’s gossip wrapped in partisan fantasy,” said Alyssa Farah Griffin, McCain’s conservative successor. “They post photos together constantly. The entire narrative feels like it was invented for clicks.”

Indeed, the claims have been thoroughly debunked. The alleged source? A fake tabloid story from August 2024 that claimed Barack Obama was having an affair with actress Jennifer Aniston—an absurd rumor traced back to a 2014 satirical article in The Economist. Even Aniston herself publicly denied it.

Michelle Obama recently addressed the rumors on the Work in Progress podcast hosted by actress Sophia Bush. “That’s the thing we as women struggle with—disappointing people,” she said. “So much so that this year people couldn’t even fathom I was making a choice for myself. They had to assume my husband and I are divorcing.”

The so-called “evidence” McCain cited? That Michelle skipped the funeral for former President Jimmy Carter and didn’t attend Donald Trump’s inauguration. But The View hosts made it clear: not showing up for photo ops doesn’t mean your marriage is falling apart.

“You don’t have to go sit at a funeral for gazillion hours when you have other plans,” Navarro snapped. “Let her live!”

Sunny Hostin chimed in, pointing out that Michelle “never wanted to be a political figure” in the first place. “She didn’t run for office—her husband did,” Hostin said. “She’s not obligated to be everywhere all the time. Frankly, we should leave her alone.”

At a time when the country is grappling with real crises—climate change, reproductive rights, book bans, gun violence—some conservatives appear more focused on trying to tear down Democratic icons with fiction.

And as Navarro bluntly put it, “If Meghan wants to peddle fiction, she should try writing novels. But leave the Obamas—and reality—out of it.”
