Arsonist Tries to Assassinate Top Democrat Sparking Urgent Manhunt

An apparent assassination attempt on a sitting Democratic governor has reignited fears of escalating political violence in post-Trump America.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — In the early hours of Sunday morning, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, his wife Lori, and their four children were jolted awake by pounding on the doors of their official residence. It wasn’t a security drill. It was real. Flames had broken out in the Governor’s Mansion — and authorities say it was no accident.

“This was arson,” the Pennsylvania State Police confirmed. “And the Governor’s family was targeted.”

Shapiro, one of the rising stars in the Democratic Party and a vocal critic of far-right extremism, had just celebrated Passover the night before with his family. Hours later, the historic residence in Harrisburg was burning.

This isn’t the first time elected Democrats have been targeted. In 2020, the FBI thwarted a kidnapping plot against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer by a far-right militia, incensed over her pandemic restrictions. And just last year, Donald Trump himself survived two alleged assassination attempts — both of which became rallying cries for his supporters.

But the attack on Shapiro — a Jewish governor who has often spoken out against hate and authoritarianism — is being seen by many as a new low.

“Let’s be clear,” said political analyst Maya Goldstein. “This wasn’t just a fire. This was an attempt to send a message: that public servants who stand up to the radical right are not safe, even in their own homes.”
