A quiet Sunday morning in Austin turned chaotic when a powerful home explosion rocked a suburban neighborhood, injuring six people and leaving dozens of homes damaged.
The blast occurred around 11:30 a.m. near Double Spur Loop and was heard across the city. Residents reported a deafening boom, which turned out to be a two-story home erupting in a violent explosion.
The Austin Fire Department confirmed that the explosion not only leveled one home but also partially collapsed another nearby. Several surrounding houses were damaged by the blast’s shockwave.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and pulled three people from the rubble of the collapsed home. Two were listed in critical but stable condition, while a third person rescued from a neighboring property was also critically injured. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries—one of whom was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Powerful enough to knock out power in the area, the explosion damaged utility lines, leaving dozens without electricity. Pedernales Electric Cooperative crews are working to restore service.
At a press conference, officials revealed that at least 24 homes in the area suffered damage, with two declared uninhabitable. The Red Cross stepped in to assist displaced families, and animal control teams are still searching for missing pets.
Though the investigation is ongoing, early reports indicate the destroyed home did not have natural gas service. However, propane tanks were discovered on the property, raising the possibility of a propane-related explosion.
Local resident Carol Hassell described the terrifying moment the blast hit. “I thought maybe a branch had fallen down on my roof,” she said. “I went out in the backyard, and the back door had been blown open. I came out to the front, and then I realized all my windows had been blown out and the front door too. There’s extensive damage to some of the ceilings.”
Hassell’s garage doors were caved in, and the deadbolts on her front door were ripped from the frame. Despite the damage, she considers herself lucky. “I’m just glad I’m okay,” she said.
Investigators continue to comb through the debris for clues into what caused the powerful explosion that turned an ordinary home into ground zero for a neighborhood disaster.
