Kamala Harris Can’t Resist Taking a Shot at Trump Amid ‘Chaos’

In her first major public appearance since the 2024 election, Kamala Harris returned to the national spotlight Thursday—and didn’t hold back. Speaking at the Leading Women Defined Summit in California, the former Vice President—who stepped up to challenge Donald Trump after President Biden bowed out last year—delivered a pointed rebuke of the Trump administration’s escalating chaos.

“We are in a moment where fear is gripping our country. And I understand it,” Harris told a packed auditorium, her tone calm but cutting.

While she joked that she wouldn’t say “I told you so,” Harris clearly came prepared to call out the consequences of Trump’s return to power.

Harris’s remarks came just days after a wave of backlash over Trump’s aggressive economic maneuvers, including a new trade clash with China that has roiled global markets and unnerved American businesses. Without naming specifics, Harris issued a broader warning about institutional silence and political cowardice: “We are seeing people stay quiet. We are seeing organizations stay quiet. We are seeing capitulating to clearly unconstitutional threats,” she said.

Her words resonated with a crowd of mostly Black women leaders, entrepreneurs, and policymakers—many of whom stood and applauded as she spoke of democratic erosion and the undoing of decades of progress.

Throughout her address, Harris offered a sobering assessment of how far the country has regressed since the Obama-Biden years, noting that hard-won victories are now under siege. “We are in the midst of seeing progress being rolled back,” she said. “Policies that we birthed—smart, effective policies that worked—are being reversed or demonized.” Her voice sharpened when she talked about how once-celebrated policies are now being reframed as liabilities. “Even the language of progress has been turned into a pejorative. They’re trying to rewrite what’s factual and dismiss what’s been proven,” Harris added.

The summit, organized by former BET CEO Debra Lee, has long been a space for strategic conversations among Black women in leadership. But this year, the mood was different: a mix of urgency, resilience, and fire. As Harris closed her speech, she reminded attendees that the stakes couldn’t be higher in the Trump era—but neither could the opportunity to fight back. “There’s great power in this room,” Harris said, standing before a cheering crowd. “And yes, the world is watching. But more importantly, there are people counting on us—to be kind, to be fierce, and to be together.”

Harris’s resurgence comes as Trump’s second term barrels forward with increasingly authoritarian undertones—from threats to gut federal agencies, to silencing dissent within the Department of Justice, to mounting tension with international allies. In 2024, Harris stepped in as the Democratic nominee after President Biden ended his campaign due to health concerns. Though she lost the general election amid a fractured Democratic coalition and aggressive voter suppression measures in key swing states, many see her as the de facto leader of the resistance movement now forming against Trump 2.0.

Harris has remained largely quiet since November. But if Thursday’s speech is any indication, that silence is over. Her message wasn’t just a warning—it was a rallying cry. And as the dust settles on Trump’s early moves in office, Harris is making one thing clear: “We knew this was coming. Now it’s our job to face it—loudly, and together.”
