Obama Slams Trump’s Authoritarian Power Grab: “If I Had Done This, They’d Have Impeached Me Twice”

Barack Obama has officially broken his silence—and he’s not mincing words.

In a fiery speech Thursday at Hamilton College in upstate New York, the former president issued a sharp rebuke of Donald Trump’s increasingly authoritarian actions, calling out what he described as “un-American and unimaginable” behavior from the current occupant of the White House.

“Imagine if I had done any of this,” Obama told the crowd. “Fox News would have called for my resignation on day one.”

After months of quietly watching from the sidelines, Obama is stepping back into the spotlight—and he’s sounding the alarm.

Obama, who rarely comments directly on his successor’s presidency, seemed visibly frustrated by what he sees as a growing erosion of democratic norms.

“It’s unimaginable that the same people who are dead silent now would have tolerated this from me or any president who came before,” he said.

He pointed specifically to Trump’s escalating attacks on institutions that once stood above partisan politics—press freedom, the judiciary, and even universities.

Obama didn’t hold back when it came to Trump’s war on the free press. Just last week, Trump barred the Associated Press from the White House press pool after it refused to use the term “Gulf of America”—a rebranding move that many see as propaganda.

“Imagine I had pulled Fox News’ credentials just because they didn’t parrot my language,” Obama said. “The outrage would have been nuclear.”

He also blasted Trump’s reported efforts to economically blacklist law firms that represent protestors or groups critical of his policies—a tactic reminiscent of autocratic regimes.

“If I had punished legal teams who challenged the Affordable Care Act, they’d be calling me a tyrant. And rightly so.”

One of Obama’s most urgent warnings focused on Trump’s treatment of universities. According to recent reports, the White House has threatened to pull funding from colleges that refuse to turn over names of student protestors.

“A government that threatens universities for protecting free speech? That’s not just alarming—it’s unconstitutional,” Obama said. “We’re watching the rule of law erode in real time.”

Obama’s appearance comes amid a political climate that’s grown more volatile since Trump’s reelection in 2024, defeating Kamala Harris after Joe Biden withdrew from the race. Though Obama campaigned vigorously for Harris, he largely remained quiet in the chaotic aftermath—until now.

At the college forum, he invoked the words of Trump’s own former Chief of Staff, John Kelly, who earlier described Trump’s behavior as “fitting the general definition of fascism.”

“We do not need four more years of a wannabe king, a wannabe dictator, running around trying to punish his enemies,” Obama said. “That’s not what this country needs. That’s not what democracy looks like.”

Obama, whose calm and constitutional approach to governance earned him global respect, closed with a direct appeal to Americans still holding out hope for Trump’s leadership.

“I understand people want change,” he said. “What I don’t understand is why anyone believes Donald Trump will change anything for the better. There is absolutely no evidence that this man cares about anyone but himself.”

The crowd responded with a standing ovation. Many attendees—mostly students—said they had never seen Obama speak with such raw urgency.

While Michelle Obama declined to attend Trump’s second inauguration, Barack Obama did—sitting just feet away from the man whose policies he now calls “a threat to the American promise.”
