A peaceful life turned into a heartbreaking mystery after Marcus Freiberger, a well-known yoga teacher from Phoenix, went missing following a blind date. Now, nearly a month later, his body has been found — and questions are piling up.
The 45-year-old was discovered on March 19 at the bottom of a rock quarry just six miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The Phoenix Police confirmed the body was Freiberger’s after fingerprint identification through the FBI’s database. The cause of death remains unknown. Officials are calling it a “death investigation.”
His sister, Tina Hall, broke the devastating news in an emotional Facebook post Tuesday.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the tragic news that Marcus is no longer with us,” she wrote. “We thank all of you for the love and support you have given Marcus and our family.”
Freiberger had been missing since February 21, when he told friends he was meeting someone new — a blind date arranged through a dating app. After that night, no one heard from him again.
Alarm bells rang days later when his two-year-old dog, Thomas, was found alone and hungry in Marcus’ apartment. Friends knew immediately: something was wrong.
“He would never leave Thomas behind. Not like that,” said longtime friend Rachel Ortiz. “He loved that dog like a child.”
Police weren’t notified until March 14. By then, precious time had slipped away. Investigators entered Marcus’ name into local and national missing persons databases. Surveillance footage showed his white 2021 GMC Sierra pickup parked in a downtown garage the night he disappeared — but police have yet to say whether the vehicle has been recovered.
The identity of the blind date remains a mystery. No arrests have been made.
Freiberger’s father, Rodger, told AZ Central he’d been working tirelessly with police in the weeks following his son’s disappearance.
“We just want answers,” Rodger said. “Marcus was a great kid. Handsome, ambitious, deeply loved by so many people. Read the Facebook comments — you’ll see how many lives he touched.”
The elder Freiberger revealed that his son had faced some tough times, including struggles with addiction and finances. He had been between apartments and recently landed a new gig at Melrose Yoga Studio.
“Sure, he had his challenges,” Rodger said. “But leaving without calling anyone? Leaving Thomas behind? That’s not Marcus. That’s why I believe foul play was involved.”
Melrose Yoga, where Marcus quickly became a favorite among students, shared a tribute on Facebook:
“May the soul rest in peace, May the soul rest in peace, May the soul attain Moksha.”
In Hinduism, moksha represents liberation from the cycle of life and death — a spiritual peace many who knew Marcus hope he has now found.
Police have yet to confirm if Marcus met anyone the night he vanished, or how he ended up at the remote quarry.
What started as a hopeful evening of connection has ended in mourning — and a growing chorus of calls for justice.
