Celebrity trainer and championship bodybuilder Einar Méndez has died suddenly at just 48 after collapsing at a gym in Mexico City.
Méndez suffered a medical emergency on Sept. 4 while doing what his devastated wife said he loved most — working out.
Reports said the father of three suffered an apparent heart attack, though an official cause of death has not yet been released.
His wife, Yan Méndez, later revealed that the fitness star had been making plans for the future, including a trip to see the Miami Dolphins and his first-ever visit to New York City.
“We are all still in shock. He left suddenly… doing what he loved most: working out,” Yan said in an emotional Instagram video.
The tragedy came shortly after the couple celebrated 30 years together.
Méndez leaves behind his wife and their three adult daughters, Fanny, Frida and María Regina.
The accomplished bodybuilder had built a large following in Mexico’s fitness world, with nearly 47,000 followers on Instagram. He was also known for training high-profile clients, including popular Nicaraguan broadcaster and W Radio personality Martha Debayle.
Debayle paid tribute to Méndez following his death, saying she would think of him every time she worked out.
“I know there won’t be a single day I train that I don’t think of you,” she wrote.
She recalled their conversations, his tough coaching, his messages reminding her about workouts and the way he pushed her to keep going when she believed she couldn’t.
Yan said her husband was deeply dedicated to his work and had even hoped to create a foundation to help people who could not afford professional fitness instruction learn proper training techniques.
Those plans will now remain unfinished.
“Everyone who knew him knows exactly who Einar Méndez was,” Yan said in Spanish. “He was strong, resilient, kind.”
She added that the family was in “deep pain” and facing a void that could never be filled.
Tributes have continued pouring in from Méndez’s clients, friends and followers as his family mourns the shocking loss.
