A school bus full of special-needs children turned into a battleground Friday afternoon when it was caught in a hail of bullets in one of the Bronx’s most violent neighborhoods. The shocking incident has left parents furious, city leaders scrambling, and many Americans asking the same question: What happened to law and order in New York City?

According to police, the yellow school bus—carrying eight children between the ages of 5 and 9—was struck by three bullets just after 2:20 p.m. on March 21. The shots rang out near East 165th Street and Trinity Avenue in the Forest Houses area, a known hotspot for gang activity.

One bullet tore through a window, forcing terrified children to duck and scream. Another two slammed into the side of the bus. Inside, a school attendant reportedly threw her own body over two students to shield them.

“It was chaos,” said a nearby resident who spoke to the bus aide after the incident. “She told me the bullets were flying through the bus. She jumped on top of the kids to protect them.”

Bus Driver Refuses to Stop — Saves Lives

Instead of slamming the brakes, the bus driver kept going—driving more than a mile away before pulling over to safety.

Jose Polanco, a fellow driver with the same company, called his coworker a hero.

“He was scared about those kids,” Polanco told ABC7. “He didn’t think about himself. He just wanted to get them out.”

That quick decision may have saved lives.

Gang War in Broad Daylight

Law enforcement sources say at least six rounds were fired. The suspects—at least four individuals dressed in black—are believed to be part of rival gangs exchanging gunfire in broad daylight. Police do not believe the school bus was the intended target, but rather, was tragically caught in the middle.

This brazen act of violence occurred while children were still in school, just blocks from an elementary school that had to be placed on lockdown.

So far, no arrests have been made. The gunmen fled on foot through Trinity Avenue and vanished into the neighborhood.

“This Is Out of Control”

Local parents and residents are demanding answers.

“This is out of control,” said Angela Ramirez, a Bronx mother of three. “Our kids can’t even ride a school bus without fearing for their lives. Where’s the mayor? Where’s the NYPD?”

While Mayor Eric Adams has not yet commented on the shooting, critics say his administration’s soft-on-crime policies have allowed the city to spiral. Violent crime in the Bronx remains among the highest in the five boroughs.

The NYPD is reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses, but with the suspects still at large, tensions remain high.

Background: A City on Edge

The Forest Houses, a public housing development, has long struggled with gang violence and illegal firearms. Despite numerous pledges from city leaders to address crime, shootings in the area continue to terrorize residents.

Last year, the NYPD reported over 300 gang-related shootings across New York City—many of them involving teens and young adults. The city’s gun task forces have been stretched thin, and community trust in law enforcement is at a breaking point.

America Watching

As the investigation continues, this incident is sure to reignite national debate over urban crime, police presence, and school safety.

For now, one thing is clear: a school bus full of innocent children was nearly turned into a crime scene, and the suspects are still walking free.

  1. And they keep saying NY’s crime is down, do they ever tell the truth! You can thank your fellow democrats for allowing illegal immigrants in, and judges that let criminals out of jail

    1. If New York had a REAL mayor they would saturate the entire neighborhood with police 24/7!!!

  2. So WHY do we need gun control?

This could only happen in the United States with our lax gun control laws! In all other western countries that have reasonable gun laws this would never have happened. With my years working in Latin America I never felt any risk for my life since they have strict gun control laws down there. Only in the areas controlled by drugs – N. Mexico and parts of Colombia are guns a problem. The rest of Latin America are gun free.

    1. ALL of Mexico/Latin America is controlled by the cartels because the innocent civilians are disarmed…

  3. What happen to law and order is there’s no respect for the police they’ve been defunded and when they try to do their job a race card is brought out. No respect or support for the officers. Guns don’t shoot themselves. Your criminals and illegals do. We need stricter penalties and followed through with them. No bleeding hearts. Death penalty needs to be used more
