A 16-year-old pregnant girl was brutally murdered after being lured to a stranger’s home with the promise of free baby clothes, authorities in Brazil confirmed Friday. Police say the suspect cut the unborn baby from her womb before attempting to pass the newborn off as her own.
The body of Emilly Azevedo Sena, who was nine months pregnant, was discovered in a shallow backyard grave in the Jardim Florianópolis neighborhood of Cuiabá, Brazil. Police arrested a married couple believed to be behind the gruesome crime.
“This was a calculated, monstrous act,” Civil Police Chief Caio Albuquerque said in a press conference. “The suspect knew exactly what she was doing. She played the role of a grieving mother while committing an act of unspeakable violence.”
Suspect Faked Pregnancy After Miscarriage
Investigators say the primary suspect, a woman whose identity has not yet been released, had suffered a miscarriage six months ago but never told her family. Instead, she allegedly continued pretending to be pregnant.
“She had everyone convinced,” Albuquerque stated. “Her husband, her family, her friends—no one suspected a thing.”
On March 13, she and her husband arrived at a local hospital with a newborn, claiming she had just given birth. But medical staff quickly noticed something was off.
“She showed no physical signs of childbirth,” an attending nurse told local reporters. “No postpartum bleeding, no contractions, nothing. We knew immediately something wasn’t right.”
Hospital staff alerted police, launching an investigation that led them straight to the suspect’s home—where they found Emilly’s body.
Social Media: A Hunting Ground for Predators?
Investigators believe Emilly met the suspect through social media, where she had been looking for baby supplies. The woman allegedly used the promise of free baby clothes to lure the teenager to her home.
“This poor girl thought she was meeting a kind stranger,” said Albuquerque. “Instead, she walked into a death trap.”
The murder has reignited fears over social media safety, particularly for vulnerable young women. Advocates warn that predators increasingly use online platforms to target victims under the guise of offering help.
“It’s terrifying,” said Silvia Nascimento, a digital safety expert in Brazil. “Young mothers, especially those in difficult situations, are desperate for help. This crime is a horrifying example of how predators take advantage of that desperation.”
Justice for Emilly
The suspect has confessed and faces multiple charges, including homicide, corpse concealment, and fraud for falsely claiming the baby as her own.
Meanwhile, Emilly’s family is left grappling with an unimaginable loss. Her mother, Ana Paula Meridiane, spoke at a memorial on Friday.
“I didn’t just lose a daughter,” she said, holding back tears. “I lost my best friend, my partner. Only those who knew her understand how pure her heart was.”
As police continue their investigation, many are left wondering: How many more tragedies like this will it take before real change happens?
