A chilling discovery has reignited questions surrounding the disappearance of University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki, 20, who vanished from a Dominican Republic beach over a week ago. Authorities recently recovered what is believed to be her clothing—a white netted sarong and a pair of beige flip-flops—neatly placed on a lounge chair near the shoreline where she was last seen.
The images, first obtained by local outlet CDN, depict the belongings undisturbed, free of signs of struggle. Officials now face mounting pressure to determine whether Konanki’s disappearance was a tragic accident or if something far more sinister unfolded that night.
A Vacation Turned Nightmare
Konanki, a Virginia native and Indian national, was on spring break with friends at the luxurious RIU Hotel & Resort in Punta Cana. The group reported her missing on March 6, after she failed to return from the beach. Surveillance footage captured her last known moments around 4:15 a.m., walking near the shoreline with Iowa resident Joshua Riibe, 22, a senior at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota.
Person of Interest Under Scrutiny
Riibe, a former high school wrestler and football player, has become the center of the investigation. The footage shows him holding hands with Konanki as their friends walked nearby. He later told police that after a swim in the rough Caribbean waters, he lost sight of her in the darkness. However, investigators say his statements have been inconsistent.
“He initially said they went into the water together, but later claimed he never saw her enter,” a high-ranking Dominican law enforcement official told Noticias SIN. “His changing stories are concerning.”
Though not officially named a suspect, Riibe remains under 24-hour surveillance. His passport has been seized, and Dominican prosecutors have intensified interrogations. Meanwhile, his parents have decried his detention, calling it “irregular” and demanding due process.
Darkness, a Power Outage, and Unanswered Questions
Sources familiar with the investigation revealed that a resort-wide power outage may have played a key role in that fateful night. The blackout reportedly disabled surveillance cameras near the beach, making it difficult to piece together what happened after Konanki and Riibe were left alone.
Local authorities haven’t ruled out foul play but acknowledge drowning remains a possibility. “Given the current evidence, we’re exploring all angles,” an investigator told El Caribe. “The presence of her clothes suggests she may have voluntarily entered the water, but we must establish why she was alone and what happened next.”
Konanki’s Family Demands Answers
Back in Virginia, Konanki’s family is growing increasingly frustrated with the slow pace of the search. They have urged U.S. officials to step in. “We need transparency and urgency,” her father said at a press conference outside their Loudoun County home. “Our daughter is missing, and we believe there’s more to this story than what’s being shared.”
A Search Intensifies
As the investigation enters its second week, missing-person posters circulate throughout the Dominican Republic and the U.S. Konanki, described as 5’3” with black hair and brown eyes, remains unaccounted for, leaving behind a troubling mystery that authorities, and her loved ones, are desperate to solve.
The coming days could prove critical, with interrogations ramping up and the search for Konanki expanding. Whether this was a tragic accident or a crime, the case has gripped both nations, demanding justice, closure, and, most importantly, the truth.

Something smells fishy here. She didn’t just vanish into thin air. These girls seem to turn up missing, every other year, or to often. Always on spring break, they disappear into thin air, or with concrete boots in the abyss.
