ICE agents have begun arresting U.S. permanent residents. The move comes on the heels of Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s promise to deport anyone he claims “supports Hamas.”
Rubio warned, “We will revoke visas and green cards of Hamas supporters, and deport them from America.” His statement came just hours before the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a green card holder known for leading student protests at Columbia University last year.
Khalil’s arrest is the latest in a series of actions targeting immigrants with legal status. Critics say this is part of a broader effort to silence dissent and intimidate political activism. “The U.S. government is using immigration law as a weapon against free speech,” said attorney Amy Greer. “This is a dangerous precedent that endangers academic and political expression.”
Khalil was detained in his home—a residence owned by his university—despite his permanent resident status. His arrest came after immigration officers revoked his student visa, a decision that has raised serious legal and ethical questions. Greer added, “We filed a habeas corpus petition immediately. The government’s actions show an alarming disregard for due process.”
This crackdown echoes historical abuses. It recalls eras when political expression was stifled by heavy-handed law enforcement. “Student activism is under siege,” said one human rights advocate. Critics argue that using immigration enforcement to suppress protest contradicts America’s long-held values of free speech and open debate.
Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin claimed the actions support executive orders aimed at combating anti-Semitism and extremism. “Khalil led activities aligned with Hamas—a designated terrorist organization,” she said. However, opponents warn that such justifications mask a broader agenda to curb dissent.
Senior advisor Stephen Miller echoed the sentiment on social media: “America exercises sole and exclusive control over admission to our country. Those who sympathize with terrorism are unwelcome.” For many, this language is a stark departure from American ideals. Democratic leaders and civil rights groups condemn the crackdown, urging a return to policies that protect immigrant rights and free expression.
As Khalil’s whereabouts remain uncertain, questions abound about the future of political activism in the United States. “This isn’t just about one arrest,” Greer stressed. “It’s about the government’s open repression of political speech. Our democracy is at stake.”
The arrest has ignited a fierce debate over the use of immigration law as a tool for political control. In the wake of these events, many Americans are left wondering: Is our commitment to free expression being sacrificed on the altar of national security?
