Russian Drone Attack ‘Damages’ Chernobyl Nuclear Shield

A Russian military drone struck the Chernobyl nuclear power plant overnight, causing damage to a protective shelter built to contain radiation from the 1986 disaster. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack a “global terrorist threat,” as it occurred just hours before he was set to meet with U.S. officials in Germany to discuss possible peace negotiations.

“This shelter was built with the help of Ukraine, Europe, and the United States to prevent further catastrophe,” Zelensky stated in a post on X. “The only country in the world that attacks such sites, occupies nuclear plants, and wages war with no regard for consequences is today’s Russia.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed an explosion near the site at approximately 2 a.m. on Friday. Ukrainian officials reported structural damage but assured the public that radiation levels remained stable. “There is no immediate threat, but such attacks risk disaster on a scale the world cannot afford,” said Ukraine’s Energy Minister German Galushchenko.

Moscow swiftly denied involvement. “The Russian military does not conduct such operations,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, calling the allegations “provocations and fabrications.”

Chernobyl, the site of one of the worst nuclear accidents in history, remains a highly sensitive location. After Russia’s brief occupation of the plant in 2022, concerns over nuclear security in war zones have only grown. “Targeting nuclear infrastructure, even unintentionally, is reckless,” warned former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton. “If confirmed, this sets a dangerous precedent.”

As Zelensky heads into high-stakes diplomatic talks, the attack is expected to be a focal point in discussions over Western support for Ukraine’s defense. “This is not just about Ukraine,” Zelensky emphasized. “This is about global security.”
