Tragic Crash Between Bus and Truck Claims 24 Lives in Zimbabwe

A deadly head-on collision between a passenger bus and a haulage truck near Beitbridge has left 24 people dead and at least 30 injured, authorities confirmed Thursday. The crash, which occurred on a major route linking Zimbabwe to South Africa, has reignited concerns over road safety in the country.

Authorities Investigate Reckless Overtaking

According to police spokesperson Paul Nyathi, the bus was en route from Harare to Beitbridge, carrying 65 passengers when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle. The maneuver proved disastrous as it resulted in a violent collision with an oncoming truck.

“We are still working to determine the full extent of injuries,” Nyathi stated. “What we know so far is that this was a high-speed crash with a devastating impact.”

Grim Scene and Immediate Response

Emergency responders arrived to find a chaotic scene. State media broadcast images of crumpled metal and bodies covered with blankets. Local medical officials reported that 17 passengers died instantly, while seven others succumbed to severe head injuries at Beitbridge Hospital.

Dr. Tafadzwa Musungwa, a government medical officer, described the emergency response as overwhelming. “Some victims arrived in critical condition. Many suffered multiple fractures and head trauma,” he said.

Government Declares National Disaster

President Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed deep sorrow, calling the accident “a heartbreaking national tragedy.” Declaring the incident a national disaster, he pledged government support for funeral and burial costs.

“Our roads should not be death traps,” Mnangagwa stated. “We must strengthen road safety measures to prevent such horrors.”

A Troubling Pattern of Road Accidents

Zimbabwe has long struggled with road safety issues. Many bus drivers speed excessively to maximize daily earnings. Poor road conditions further compound the risk. The stretch of highway where the crash occurred had recently undergone resurfacing, yet fatal accidents remain common.

Local transport expert Tendai Maponga called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws. “Overtaking on narrow roads is a major hazard,” he said. “Drivers need to prioritize safety over speed.”

As families grieve, authorities continue investigations into the exact causes of the crash. Meanwhile, citizens demand urgent reforms to prevent further tragedies on Zimbabwe’s highways.
