Senate lawmakers are grappling with the latest bombshell from President Donald Trump: a U.S.-led reconstruction of Gaza, possibly involving American troops.

While the proposal has drawn skepticism from both sides of the aisle, Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) has emerged as a surprising voice of openness to the idea, setting off a firestorm of debate.

A Divided Senate

Trump’s comments, delivered at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, sent shockwaves through Washington. He framed the idea as a necessary step toward rebuilding Gaza after the devastation of the recent conflict, but reactions on Capitol Hill were swift and largely dismissive.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), a staunch ally of Trump, voiced hesitation. “We’ll see what our Arab friends say about that. I think most South Carolinians would not be excited about sending Americans to take over Gaza,” he told Jewish Insider.

Republicans were largely skeptical. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) quipped, “There’s probably a couple of kinks in that slinky.” Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) outright rejected the idea, arguing U.S. resources should be prioritized domestically. “I don’t know that I think it’s the best use of United States resources to spend a bunch of money in Gaza,” he said.

Fetterman’s Unexpected Stance

Amidst bipartisan pushback, Fetterman took a different approach. “It’s a provocative part of the conversation, but it’s part of the conversation, and that’s where we are,” he said. He pointed to the failure of Palestinian leadership, blaming Hamas for the October 7 attacks and the ongoing instability. “They allowed 10/7 to occur, and now Gaza has to be rebuilt. Where are the people going to live? Where are they going to go?”

When asked if he supported deploying U.S. troops, Fetterman was noncommittal but open. “I don’t know what the role [of U.S. forces] is, but they’re obviously a part of it, and I fully support.”

His comments immediately drew backlash. Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) dismissed the idea as “an embarrassment,” while Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) called it “deranged.” Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) pointedly criticized Fetterman’s openness, saying, “There were a lot of people who sincerely believed that Donald Trump would be good for world peace. And now he is talking about occupying a country in the Middle East. We have seen this movie before.”

A Rift Among Democrats

Fetterman’s remarks highlight growing divisions within the Democratic Party on Middle East policy. While many Democrats have condemned the idea of U.S. intervention, Fetterman’s position signals a break from traditional progressive stances. His vocal support for Israel in recent months has already set him apart from some of his colleagues.

Other Democrats were less willing to entertain Trump’s idea. Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) called it “insane” and warned that it would make the U.S. look unreliable on the world stage. “I can’t think of a place on Earth that would welcome American troops less,” he said.

Meanwhile, Senate Republicans appeared divided, with some backing Trump’s proposal on social media. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) called it “bold action in hopes of achieving lasting peace in Gaza,” while Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) praised Trump’s commitment to eliminating Hamas and ensuring regional security.

What Comes Next?

Despite Trump’s confidence, the path forward remains unclear. The Biden administration has yet to weigh in, and Senate leadership has not indicated whether the proposal will be seriously considered. However, Fetterman’s willingness to engage with the idea ensures that it will remain part of the debate.

As the controversy unfolds, the question remains: Is Fetterman reshaping Democratic foreign policy, or is he an outlier in a party largely opposed to deeper U.S. military entanglements? Either way, his stance has added an unexpected twist to an already volatile situation.

  1. As if our terrible involvement in Iraq wasn\’t enough..(we helped to totally destablize the whole middle east).this idea is not only an incredible insult to the Palestinians but it is the reason we wind up looking like \”ugly americans\” who have no regard for the dignity of other people (especially now that we are also struggling to take away aid from so many poor countries). It is a frightening and horrible idea..I am sure they are burning american flags already…

  2. I am shocked shocked that Jew Fetterman approves of a plan that favors evil Israel… NOT!
The so-called poor countries need to end their corruption and get themselves standing on their own two feet! Raise FOOD, create businesses/industries/education, build housing, stop abusing drugs, stay away from religion fueled wars that destroy your housing, water, infrastructure, etc…
