In a shocking move, approximately 55 employees at the U.S. Department of Education were placed on leave after participating in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training programs during the Trump administration’s first term. This sudden decision has left workers bewildered, fearing they may lose their jobs over their participation in programs set up under the former president’s own political appointees.

A Punitive Shift Against Federal Workers

The suspension of federal workers from their roles marks an aggressive act in Trump’s ongoing battle against the federal workforce. The move comes after his administration took a tough stance on the size and influence of government departments.

But the timing has raised eyebrows. Just a few years ago, under Trump’s own administration, DEI councils were created by political appointees like Kimberly Richey and Kenneth Marcus, who helped establish the very programs now being scrutinized.

“It’s a form of entrapment,” said Sheria Smith, president of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 252. Smith expressed her outrage to NBC News, stating that these workers were encouraged to take the diversity courses by the government, only to face administrative leave and potential job loss. “Now they’re using those same courses as a basis to punish employees,” she said.

Federal Workers in Limbo

The employees on leave will continue to receive pay, but they’ve been stripped of access to their work emails and barred from reporting to their offices. This uncertainty has sent shockwaves throughout federal agencies, particularly at the Department of Energy, where at least 14 employees have also been suspended, many of whom were involved in recruiting veterans and using data to improve the workplace.

“It’s a shock-and-awe tactic,” Smith continued. “They’re bombarding us with confusing emails meant to intimidate, making employees fear the worst—losing their jobs.” The union president believes this is part of a broader effort to push workers out of government service altogether. “They’re offering employees eight months of salary to resign, making it seem like they have no choice but to leave voluntarily.”

The DEI Push Under Trump

In 2019, the Education Department set an ambitious goal of training 400 employees on leading a diverse workforce, sending out invitations for a two-day course focused on developing DEI skills. “Your positive actions are the catalyst on our journey to achieving ED’s diversity and inclusion objectives,” the training announcement read.

For many workers, the offer seemed like an opportunity to support the department’s broader goals. But now, in a surprising reversal, those same employees find themselves targets of a new punitive measure. The shift in policy raises serious questions about the inconsistent application of the law and the role of government appointees in shaping workplace practices.

Legal Concerns and Veteran Impact

One lawyer, Subodh Chandra, is challenging the suspension of his client, an Army veteran, who was placed on leave after serving as a member of a DEI council. Chandra pointed out that the council was established by Trump’s own appointees, making his client’s suspension seem contradictory. “My client didn’t violate any executive order, nor did his colleagues. He was simply a member of a council that was set up under Trump’s administration,” Chandra explained.

Brittany Holder, a spokeswoman for the AFGE, revealed that only two employees at the Department of Education had specific DEI duties, both of whom have been placed on leave. “The atmosphere is tense,” Holder said. “People are worried and angry about the uncertainty surrounding their jobs.”

The Fallout

As more employees come under scrutiny, the union is bracing for an escalation in these suspensions. Thousands of federal workers, some of whom attended similar training sessions across various agencies, may soon find themselves in a similar predicament.

For now, the future remains unclear. But one thing is certain: this latest round of suspensions is fueling a growing sense of unease among federal employees across the nation. “It feels like they’re trying to push us out, intimidate us into resigning,” said one anonymous Education Department worker. “But we’re not going anywhere without a fight.”

  1. Awww. Let the federal employees find out what it’s like no job no money. A lot of our vets and Americans are familiar with that situation. Our senior citizens are struggling also.
