In a dramatic and gut-wrenching moment during Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Senate confirmation hearing, Democratic Senator Maggie Hassan broke down in tears as she unleashed a fiery rebuke against his history of spreading vaccine misinformation. The charged confrontation electrified the chamber, turning what was already a contentious hearing into an emotional battleground.
Hassan, a New Hampshire Democrat, couldn’t hold back her emotions as she recounted her own family’s struggles while condemning Kennedy’s failure to disavow the long-debunked claim that vaccines cause autism.
With her voice cracking and tears welling in her eyes, she addressed the chamber: “Some of you may not know that I am the proud mother of a 36-year-old young man with severe cerebral palsy,” she choked out, struggling to maintain composure. “And every single day, I ask myself—what did I do when I was pregnant with him that might have caused the hydrocephalus that has shaped his entire life?”
(Hydrocephalus is a condition involving fluid buildup in the brain, which can contribute to cerebral palsy when it occurs during pregnancy.)
Her breathing hitched as she turned to Kennedy, her face a mix of sorrow and fury.
“So please do not dare suggest that anybody in this chamber—Republican or Democrat—doesn’t want to find out what causes autism,” she said, voice trembling with rage. “Do you know how many friends I have whose children have autism?” She paused, visibly overwhelmed. “You are standing in the way of real progress.”
The room fell into stunned silence as Hassan’s impassioned plea reverberated through the chamber. But Kennedy, ever defiant, refused to offer a clear answer.
When Senator Bernie Sanders later pressed him on whether he would unequivocally state that vaccines do not cause autism, Kennedy dodged yet again.
“I’m not going to go into HHS with any preordained—” Kennedy started, before Sanders abruptly cut him off.
“That is a very troubling response,” Sanders shot back, eyes flashing with anger.
The moment marked a defining flashpoint in the fight over public health policy, with Hassan’s tearful plea capturing the anguish and frustration of millions who have battled misinformation.
Kennedy’s nomination remains uncertain, but one thing is clear—Hassan’s emotional breakdown has ensured this hearing will be remembered for years to come.
