In an unusual episode on Capitol Hill, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) confronted what she believed to be a man in the women’s restroom near the House floor on Thursday.
The supposed intruder turned out to be none other than Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE), the first openly transgender member of Congress. This incident has ignited fresh debate over transgender rights and decorum in the Capitol.
According to multiple sources, Boebert was seen exiting the women’s restroom, visibly agitated. She reportedly told colleagues on the House floor that she confronted someone she believed should not be in the restroom. “You shouldn’t be here,” she allegedly said.
However, the “man” turned out to be Rep. McBride, who has been in compliance with Speaker Mike Johnson’s controversial policy banning transgender individuals from using single-sex restrooms aligned with their gender identity.
A Republican lawmaker, speaking anonymously, recounted overhearing Boebert acknowledging her error. “She said she went to apologize,” the representative shared. Bloomberg journalist Alex Warner corroborated the sequence, noting Boebert’s approach to Capitol security moments later. “She seemed flustered but admitted her mistake, saying, ‘There was a rumor there was [a man], but it wasn’t true.’”
Rep. McBride, unshaken by the incident, emphasized her focus on legislative priorities over personal confrontations.
“I’m not here to fight about bathrooms,” McBride said in a statement to the press. “I’m here to fight for Delawareans and to bring down the costs facing families. Like all members, I will follow the rules outlined by Speaker Johnson, even if I disagree with them.”
McBride has faced significant scrutiny since her historic election in 2024 but remains steadfast in her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and economic justice.
This latest misstep adds to Boebert’s growing reputation for headline-grabbing antics. From vaping in a Denver theater to heated debates over culture-war issues, her actions continue to polarize public opinion.
Boebert’s office issued a brief statement addressing the incident: “I made an error regarding a mistaken identity. I apologized, learned a lesson, and it won’t happen again.”
The incident underscores the heated atmosphere surrounding transgender rights in Congress. Boebert, alongside Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Nancy Mace (R-SC), has championed efforts to restrict transgender individuals’ access to facilities. Last November, Mace introduced a resolution aimed at banning transgender women from using women’s restrooms within the Capitol complex.
For LGBTQ+ advocates, the confrontation serves as a stark reminder of the stakes. “This isn’t just about bathrooms,” said activist Jordan Rivers. “It’s about dignity and recognizing people for who they are. These policies only serve to marginalize.”
As Republicans push forward with culture-war legislation, Democrats are likely to amplify calls for inclusivity and equality. Meanwhile, Boebert’s apology—however rare—has sparked a mix of reactions across the political spectrum.
Whether this incident will temper the fiery rhetoric around such debates remains to be seen. For now, it’s another chapter in a saga that highlights the deep divisions—and humanity—within Congress.
