Jim Acosta’s future at CNN is in question after reports revealed that the network is offering him a move to a late-night time slot—one that would see his show air at midnight. The proposed shift has caused significant frustration for the veteran journalist, who is reportedly considering leaving the network rather than accept the reassignment, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Acosta, known for his fiery exchanges with President Trump during his time as the White House correspondent, may not be willing to accept the move from his current 10 a.m. Eastern time slot to the midnight graveyard shift. A CNN insider told Fox News Digital that Acosta was “getting hosed” by the new schedule.
“Acosta is a talented broadcaster who could handle any slot on the network,” the anonymous staffer said. “The midnight thing is shocking, but it is what it is.”
The shake-up comes as CNN’s leadership, under Mark Thompson, has announced significant changes to the network’s programming. One major move involves shifting Wolf Blitzer’s “Situation Room” from the evening to the morning slot, alongside Pamela Brown. Additionally, CNN is laying off about 200 employees as it repositions itself from a traditional television network to a more digital-focused news outlet.
For Acosta, this reshuffle means the end of his daily show, CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta, which has aired at 10 a.m. Eastern time. A CNN spokesperson told The Post that the network is in “active discussions” with Acosta about a new time slot, but no further details have been shared.
The suggestion that Acosta be moved to a midnight show has sparked concerns among some at CNN, who view it as a significant demotion, especially considering the typically low viewership during that time. However, network sources have pointed out that airing at midnight on the East Coast would mean a 9 p.m. broadcast on the West Coast—still a prime-time slot in that time zone.
If Acosta agrees to the shift, he might need to relocate to Los Angeles, as that is where the show would likely be broadcast from. Sources noted that while the move to the West Coast isn’t mandatory, it would align with CNN’s global audience, as the network is not solely focused on the East Coast.
Acosta’s tenure at CNN has been marked by his direct and confrontational style, particularly during the Trump administration. His candidness and tenacity in holding the former president and his administration accountable have made him a prominent figure in American journalism.
As the situation unfolds, many are wondering if Acosta will accept the changes or choose to leave CNN entirely. The network’s decision to remove him from the daytime schedule is raising eyebrows, with some speculating it could be an effort to recalibrate its programming in response to political pressures—particularly from the Trump era.
